Ordered a Lightning remote from eBay and programmed it for frunk release.

Took about 5 tries, but after starting up the MME then shutting down, opening then closing the door, then followed the procedure sent by the eBay seller - immediate pairing was a success.

So, after reading your post and the comments this really got me to thinking about how the fob works. Correct me if I am wrong but when the fob battery is good the fob is transmitting and actually not recieving any signal to open the vehicle, it is the vehicle that recieves the signal.

To my point, let's say you own a Mach E and also a Lightning. Could you program one of your Lightning fobs to also work with the Mach E and end up with a fob capable of controlling both vehicles?

Please don't answer back and tell me how awkward that would be, my only point is if it is a possibility.

No. The pairing process uses two-way communication with the fob. It can only be paired to one vehicle at a time.

Ford has bigger fish to fry than the few thousand job 1 cars still waiting for the remote frunk release HVAC, BC 1.2, NCAS, etc. its priority is below nonexistent. Jim Farley doesn’t decide on OTA priorities, otherwise we’d have had it a year ago.
Sad, but it makes sense. On the other hand, those few thousand vehicle owners are probably the ones who will be most likely to replace their cars first, and some may be less interested in another Ford given how they perceive they were treated ?

I'm curious where you are finding that info, I would love to read up on it. I was always under the impression that it is only a transmitter and sends but does not receive a signal.

It doesn’t receive a signal in normal operation. But the pairing process uses a type of NFC to write to the fob. That’s why it has to be placed in a special spot.

Mmmm, that does make sense.
It's like rolling codes for your garage door opener.
MME talks with the key fob in 2 directions and keeps changing codes but is in sync with the vehicle.
It's to prevent others from accessing your vehicle by cloning it.

Didn’t some of the ford remotes (maybe the older ones) have a 2-way RF link? I seem to recall an LED that would flash to confirm the signal was received by the vehicle.

I thought that was actually a problem now? Somehow, people use a signal repeater to pick up the fob and relay it to the vehicle? Maybe that’s just to start the vehicle?

Exactly. On the picture of the car, there’s both a rear hatch release and a frunk release. There is a special procedure that has to be run in FDRS to enable it (my dealer did that for me). @generaltso has the details. The only thing that has to be done at the ford galactic supercomputer (back-end) is to enable the release icon in FordPass for my VIN.
Did you fill out the form in triplicate and submit it to the Vogon home world for approval?

Our 2017 Explorer FOB has a green LED that will light up when remote start is successful. Otherwise, the LED will turn red.
So yes, some kind of signal being sent back to that older FOB from the car.

I finally got my extra key fob yesterday through the CSP and it was the old version :(, I really want the black pony version, wonder why they had the old version in stock still?

This is a real need. You can also open the frunk with the door code (enter code then hold down 8), but that's not convenient either.
