Fun with SOC

I have been noticing something since it has been getting colder around here that some might get a kick out of.

Set the car to charge to 60% starting at midnight which means it finishes around 1:30 am to maybe as late as 3:30am depending on starting SOC. No departure time set.

Garage was 18C/65F at 4pm when starting to take my wife to work car shows 59% SOC. Outside temperature 13C/55F.

Drive about 6 miles/9.7 km to her work, SOC 61%.
Drive home, SOC 60%.

Mine used to do something similar: I'd charge to 85% and would hit 86 or 87% backing out of the driveway. Someone once posted about seeing 101% charge after driving for a bit. A few months ago, I would charge to 85%, but it would read 83% when I started it. Now, it mostly behaves as expected, but I don't think I did anything special.

This would only be mildly interesting if the same data was shown in warm temps. Is the change due to the battery warming? Or, is regen a piece of it?

And -20F isn't cold in Antarctica. It is all relative. I remember when I was in Tucson AZ and they would bring out the heavy jackets when the temperature hit 70F. When a few of my coworkers went to Denver in like May they had their heavy jackets on and were still extremely cold, while the people were walking around in t-shirts and shorts.

Just so everyone knows I just found it funny, I'm not in the least bit concerned about it.

And for what is worth I don't think there is anything wrong with the BCM calibration. I'm pretty sure it just has to do with the way a battery reacts to being a bit cold and then warmed up.

I highly doubt you'll ever see somebody walking around wearing shorts and Tshirt at -20F. I do however recall one sunny spring day in Duluth, MN. The temperature was about 45-50F and several people were wearing shorts and Tshirts.

I had a college friend from Duluth. Those people are....different. We were watching the weather report as a nasty winter storm was heading towards campus. I don't remember the details, but the reporter warned that any exposed skin could get frostbite in 30 seconds. My friend scoffed and said, "Pfft, at that windchill, you've got *at least* 2 minutes". Thanks, bud, that helps a lot with my 20 minute walk to the quad...

Sometimes it’s fun, sometimes it’s a massive relief

Set off on a 23-mile run home with 21 miles range left once.

Took it real steady, turned off e-heat & AC and tucked in behind a big truck on the dual carriageway doing 55mph and when I got home I still had around 17 miles range left‍

My usual drive is 70mph, e-heat & AC on 23deg C auto so driving style predicted one range estimate and the difference was the reality of an altered drive style.
