First time I have seen it. Not on Facebook. Still think that it's funny.

I wonder what the efficiency of that is, obviously terrible compared to power plants but probably not as bad as you think vs an ice vehicle.

Edit: A quick google and reading a few different calculations seems to suggest this is actually more efficient than all but the most efficient hybrids and is pretty much why trains are diesel-electric, not simply diesel.

Not atrocious efficiency, but terribly inconvenient.

I used to use do ranch welding with a portable generator with a 50A 240V outlet similar to this: https://www.championpowerequipment.com/product/201067-9000-watt-open-frame-inverter-with-co-shield/

It has a claimed 10-hour run time at 25% load (15 Amps) using 4.25 gallons of gas. I would run mine at 50% load (30A) and run out of gas within about 2.5 - 4 hours of work. If we could pull 32 Amps continuous over 4 hours, we can add about 80 miles of range. Using about 4.25 gallons. That's about 18 miles per gallon.

If you only have a 120v, 15/20A option... Well, just call a tow truck.

I have a generator sitting in the garage with 2yr old treated gas inside... no power outages recently... so my plan is actually to burn off all the gas probably when my mach e arrives one day and charge it on the 240v circuit!

Maybe not terrible efficiency, but part of that is that most of these small engines have zero pollution controls. They're quite dirty. I've seen different numbers thrown out, depending on which pollutant is being measured and what size engines are being compared, but common numbers are 1 hour of use generates the same pollution as 100 - 150 miles of driving a car.

I’ve got a dual fuel generator with a 40# propane tank and a 240V 40Amp outlet on the side of it. If I’m ever dumb enough to run out of battery, and I’m not too far from home, you can bet I’ll have someone run that out to me for a 30 minute fill up. Probably WAY quicker than waiting on ford roadside assistance to send me a flatbed and teaching them how to properly load my MME.
This spring I want to see how much charge I can get out of a 20# propane tank.
