Thats right... I see a lot of posts indicating the car "reads" speed signs... it doesn't. I know that the ad copy explains it this way but it uses a GPS map.
No, it also reads signs. It can use both.

the map data is supposed to be a backup, but it seems to override a sign it read previously on the same road.
I second this. On multiple occasions I've observed it pull the wrong speed from the database, then read the sign and start going the correct speed

I have seen it read speed signs in construction zones, but only if they are on the right side of the road.

Oh that's interesting. I've seen it read both sides of the road

This happened to me as well. The GPS had me going in circles through a residential neighborhood 80 miles away from where I actually was: going down I95 at 78 mph. The GPS thought I just turned into a residential road and slammed me down from 78 to 25 mph. Not good, but I got used to it as it thought I was going in circles and I kept getting back into the same residential roads. I could tell when it was going to happen as I moved from inside a river to the area with the roads. So crazy.

The picture is blurry because I took it while driving, but you can see I95 and you can see where the GPS thinks I am. Not even close. I never moved away from that general position the entire drive home to from DC to Williamsburg.
