Maybe? But I think we both hope not.

To the immediate topic at hand, a tariff war on cars happened as recently as a few months ago with Biden imposing a 100% tariff on China.

A tariff “war” happened in 2018 with Trump fighting with China.

The same doom and gloom predictions were going on in 2018 and it turned out ok.

Allies all being mad at us? Sounds like exactly what I was told in 2016 and 2002.

I don’t feel like history repeats itself, but it often rhymes.

We shall see, but this doesn’t seem all that different than what we’ve seen before.

When talking about topics like this, I like to share this quote and have people guess when it was written-

““It is a gloomy moment in the history of our country. Never has the future seemed so incalculable as at this time. The domestic economic situation is in chaos. Prices are so high as to be utterly impossible. The political caldron seethes and bubbles with uncertainty. Russia hangs as usual, like a cloud, dark and silent upon the horizon. It is a solemn moment. Of our troubles no man can see the end.”

It could sound like many times, even now. But it’s from Harper’s Weekly in 1857.
Like I have said before, the times that we currently live in have never happened before.

I don't recall electing a convicted Felon but I could be wrong, just to name one?

As much as people like to suggest that both sides do this or this has happened before, I dare you to show me at this level?

Like I have stated before, I wish I had your level of optimism.

The back and forth with Tariffs have never happened like this. Yes, Tariffs have been used but not at this insane level from day to day back and forth. No one knows what to do or how to plan.

And in three years civil war broke out and America suffered its largest number of casualties in any war. We suffered through 4 years of war, 15 years of the Reconstruction period and generations of simmering hate.
it seems Harper’s Weekly hit the nail on the head.

If you really want to narrow the topic down to how will automakers handle it.

Did vehicle prices go up last time we put additional steel and aluminum tarrifs?

Yes.

So are vehicle prices about to go up because we are doing that again, plus on more things?

I think everyone knows the answer.

Ha! We have had tons of leaders who have committed felonies. I guess the “convicted” part is a new one.

Not defending it, just pointing out that it’s nothing new.

This is hardly our first tariff war, nor will it likely be the last (unless it works).

https://www.history.com/news/7-trade-wars-boston-tea-party-smoot-hawley

And yes, like most wars, it sucks. But again, it’s not as unique as you make it sound.

I see it just as the “latest problem in a series of problems in the US history.”

Where we differ though is on how we think it will turn out.

I’m still optimistic this COULD be a good thing for our country in the end. I get the feeling you hate it categorically more based on whose idea it was.

I’ve brought it up a few times, but did you oppose Bidens 100% tariff on Chinese autos last year?

And to answer your question on Biden's Tariff, I was not a fan of that as well. I am not a big fan of Biden but I can at least say that he had morals and he was/is not a convicted felon.

I know some people think that the felony thing is some sort of mic drop, but the voters didn’t seem to care.

He did claim to be a “man of the people.” Probably related to the 1/3 of adults in this country with a criminal record. ? And those who have committed crimes but never caught? Well that number rounds to 100%.

It’s been a very long time since I believed in the “morals” of a President. They let me down time and time again.

They seem to get judged based on policy instead.

And the tariff policy? Super risky and kinda sucks, but I sure hope it works.

Of all of the politicians in the US, there are many that have not committed crimes along with many of them that are squeaky clean so to speak. Of those, there are countless ones that are much smarter than the current one as well. Peel some of those back, out of those there are many (if not all) that have not been involved in a sexual crimes along with filing multiple bankruptcies. In fact, he is not only the most corrupt politician but ranks right up their to be the most corrupt person period and yet you seem to think the laugh emoji is the take it or leave it mode that we are in. Many in his former cabinet were pleading with us not to elect this man including his former VP. I have never seen this and this has never happened before. As much as you take the painful gymnastics to bend the thoughts of "they all do this", they don't. Either you are choosing to ignore the facts on the ground or you truly don't see history the same as I do. Take those, and there are many that have not been impeached or is a bully. I could go on but I think you get my point.

The problem is that the people have accepted this behavior as "normal" including you. They dismiss it as "everyone does it" or "the people wanted it via the vote" so you really can't do much now?

Call me old fashioned but I don't see this Movie ending well. People get what they vote for and here we are. The only silver lining is that many of the people that voted for him will feel the most pain and here very shortly. That my friend is called Karma.

I am heading to Hawaii now for a Vacation so you may not hear from me for a while but you all enjoy the day!!

Enjoy your trip!

This may be an area where you’re much more optimistic and I’m the pessimistic one.

The amount of corruption and illegal activity in our government seems rampant…… and that’s just the stuff they get CAUGHT for.

The “good ones” seem more rare than the corrupt ones from what I’ve seen.

And while I may think it’s somewhat expected at this point, I definitely don’t think it’s ok.

A simple example of what I would consider a form of corruption- Presidential pardons-
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lis...lemency_by_the_president_of_the_United_States

The last time a President didn’t set convicted criminals free was 1881…… but that’s only because Garfield died a few months into his presidency and didn’t have time.

If we start looking at other presidents, we have sexual harassment, illegal drug use, DUI’s, lying under oath, illegal wire taps etc. And that’s just a short list during our lifetimes of the things we KNOW they got caught for.

Really rich egomaniacs in power and politics don’t have a great history.

Again, enjoy Hawaii! We were in Kauai over new years and it’s beautiful.?

My father in-law was a union member that would go on strike when the union told him to. When I would ask him why he was on strike, he would say "because they told me to". When I pointed out the lost wages and the amount of time it would take to make up the loss with any increase, he would look at me funny.

Then again, he retired with a very small pension, but free medical benefits for life...

Anyway, he was ticked that I drove a Datsun 280Z. I bought an American car (Chevy) to quiet him after that, and it was nothing but problems. He didn't like that, and handwrote a note to GM....

His house had a Toshiba TV, a Panasonic VCR, he proudly use a big Panasonic video camera, ... But "buy American".
My father-in-law was a Chrysler UAW member.
They would go on strike in the 80's for forty cents an hour. I would say the exact same thing, why go on strike, it will cost you more than the raise is worth.
His response, "I am doing it for the guy getting hired next year".
As a retried union member, with a pension and reasonably priced health care, I can tell you my union changed my life for the better.

I’ll accept disagreeing there. As of course it’s just both of us speculating on the future.

Maybe it’s my nature to look past the headlines. I did work for a newspaper for 8 years after all.

The real news never seems to be as good, nor as bad as the headlines suggest.

I also learned that the “real news” died along with the newspapers. The “news” used to be what happened yesterday.

Now it’s all just a “prediction of what could happen tomorrow.” That’s not news, it’s science fiction. I wish the news today came with a disclaimer that said “for entertainment purposes only.” The old news disclaimer used to be at the top of the section named: Opinion.

next logical step is for the admin to start reporting fake economic data. while obviously this comes from the fed and is in theory independent, we all know how that goes these days.

then everything will be fine, Baghdad bob style.

Welcome to the George Costanza era. Doing the opposite of what makes sense, with the added element of undoing every single advance collectively made. If it ain't broke, break it! That's the current foundational approach. Not a "policy;" just retribution for all those imagined offenses to [his] personhood. That'll teach us. But it's a costly lesson for those of us in the lower 95%, huh?
