I got an old android from my brother in law. I put aam on it. No root required. Combine that with Xbox game pass plus a Xbox one controller. You get mobile gamin. Plus I have all the streaming apps on the phone.

Google will start to allow YouTube video playing when the car is in park soon.

https://chromeunboxed.com/android-auto-youtube-lyft-integration

My guess is this is the direct result of the BEV boom that is happening, and people want to watch "stuff" when they are sitting at DCFC station and want to be entertained.

This will be, of course, a "stock" feature that will be enabled. I understand that there are other options that have been discussed, but this will be something available (hopefully) to all Androind Auto users with an OTA from Google. I'm sure that will open the flood gates for other streaming providers (Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, etc).

No you have to run an app like AAM (Android Auto Mirror) on top of Android Auto.
I was playing xbox no problem, but I'm running in to problems with netflix and other video streaming apps that have DRM on the streams. The issue is that AAM and it's like rely on screen capture technology. There is another app I want to try but am weary to install a russian made app. Screen2Auto. I can't get it to work without rooting this phone.

I'd prefer if apple would just allow things like netflix etc to play directly from your phone, it can be done they just choose not to. The Carplay interface is vastly superior to Android Auto.
I may look at getting the device mentioned in earlier threads that way I can just use my iphone and not have to rely on an older device.

Correct...all of this comes down to DRM and confirming that whatever display you are using with either an app or OS has the correct DRM for the display (usually HDCP with large screens like monitors, TVs, and projectors).
And yes, if AAM uses screen mirroring, then that would almost certainly be a direct violation of HDCP/DRM for the streaming content, and it would show nothing.
Apple is actually the most restrictive about HDCP for most of their products. For example on macOS, you can't display ANYTHING from an Apple on a screen that doesn't comply with HDCP, regardless of content. We have a large auditorium where I work, and we have a lecture capture system that we would like to use for presentations. We would use it more, but it refuses to show anything from a macOS device...even if the device is just showing a slide deck or simple picture.
That being said, I imagine that Apple would probably follow suit with Carplay's ability to allow video from apps on a parked car if Android Auto starts to do it with YouTube and other apps..

(YouTubeTV...please please please...YouTubeTV...)

What's nice about the joyauto device is that it is plug n play when you want to use it and it doesn't require all the investment in hacking that I found the rooted Android auto stuff required.

that said the only service that won't play in the device is D+. still trying to figure this one out but I think it does a check the other services including Netflix do not and Disney+ decides it doesn't like the device at all.

A few weeks ago, Google announced upcoming (late 2022) support for YouTube and maybe other video streaming apps on Android Automotive. As far as I've seen though, they've not made a similar announcement for Android Auto. Confusingly, the two are not the same.

I thought Microsoft had the worst product/service naming practices for a giant tech company, but this may take the cake.

The other problem is out of sync audio and latency...

Both are good options, the rooted phone way just requires more technical setup which isn't as accessible for as many people. But it is more flexible and higher performance potentially if you can figure out the setup.
He said “no root required” ?

By the time he’s done with all the connections and rebooting everything, his car is charged ? also, where does he store all that stuff?

Ha ha the frunk is a magic place!

Tbh though, that was definitely all for show. Even if I did want to carry my Xbox around the latency was too much to make it actually playable
