Hi fellow Mach-e owners

I have just had a 32amp Commando socket installed into my garage to charge my Mach-e.

I'm based in the UK so this gives me a 7kw charge which is more than adequate. Considering this install by a qualified electrician cost me just £165 including all required parts I would like to know if there are any actual benefits to having a charger unit installed by my local energy supplier which costs around £850?

Am I missing something?

Is the provided Ford charger unit robust enough to use once or twice per week?

I would be interested in your thoughts

Yes, it is robust enough. However, your electrician didn't install the proper socket.

A dedicated charger will monitor for earth faults etc. You've bought an expensive car so why skimp on safety. Not all dedicated charging installations will cost £850. You can shop around for the best deal.

The included Ford Mobile Charger will pull 32 amps continuously. Not sure about code in the UK, but in North America anything that pulls a continuous load for 3+ hours requires a circuit that handles 125% of that load (or stated differently, it most only pull 80% of what the circuit can handle).

This means you'd need a 40 amp circuit to pull 32 amps continuously.

Yes, the included charger will do just fine. If you want to keep that one in the car at all times just in case or for road trips, then you could install another one in the garage. If you get one that plugs in then no more electrical work is necessary. I’ve been only using the included one since February. We take it along for road trips but otherwise it stays in the garage.

Clearly another demonstration that the US and UK are different countries divided by a common language. ?

I have a dedicated charger (EU car in Belgium) but the Mach E is limited to charging at 11khw. (Charger can deliver much more..)

So if you can load all night and have time spare, the difference from 7 to 11 is probably not worth the effort.
Only if you don't get the car fully charged overnight you can consider it.
