Hello,

Wanted some expert advice on this. I borrowed this picture from user @markboris to illustrate.

So I noticed a rattle coming from the sub and it got progressively worse. I took apart the panels and got access to the sub. I tightened one of the screws holding it in place and it sounded fine, but then when I put the panel back in, I noticed a rattling sound. I figured out that the white insulation pictured was creating a vibrating/rattling noise when hitting the sub, so I removed it and now it's crystal clear with no rattle.

My question is if there is any concern with removing that white insulation piece? Will there be any issues (like dust/dirt getting in)? Not sure if it's required or not, if it is I want to put it back or put something there. Thanks in advance!

There is no problem at all removing the sound deadening pad that is over the speaker grill. Its purpose is to block road noise that is in the wheel well/rear quarter panel area from getting into the cabin. You may get a bit more road noise but just crank up the tunes a little louder. ?

Yeah, realize that paper speaker cone will be the only thing separating the road noise from the inside of the car. (there is a wheel well liner that deflects water but noise will get through it).

Thank you! Appreciate the insight. Do you think it really will make a difference if I am driving without the radio on?

Thanks! Do you think it will be noticeable? I wonder how much noise it actually prevents. I'll try driving but I think it would affect the rear seat passengers more.

No. Unless you are in the back seat, I highly doubt you will notice any difference. Even then it would be very little.

Hi Threeonethird, would you mind describing how you removed the panel to get to the Subwoofer? I have the same rattle going on. Thank you.

How about some self explanatory photos from the repair manual. You don't need to pull the entire panel off, just that one corner to get back in there if you are trying to find the noise in the subwoofer area. Make sure when you put that panel back, the snaps all go back into their holes. Take your time taking it apart and reinstalling it.

Were you both able to successfully remove the insulation piece? How was the rattle and road noise afterward? I think that’s the source of my bass rattle

Thanks for the post. So you only pull the rear part of the panel correct? None of the other steps like removing the tail gate strip as shown in pics 5 and 7 are needed? I just want to remove or adjust the white noise reduction material as it's vibrating against the speaker ... or at least that's what I'm hoping is causing the noise.

Let me know if the instructions provided by Mark Boris work...if not I can try to come up with some instructions

yes the white insulation piece is glued on, you can carefully remove it by peeling it off. Rattle was gone, and I can't notice any increase in road noise (but keep in mind I am upfront). The only seat in the car that would get affected - if at all - would be the rear passenger.

Correct and I used a plastic car panel remover tool (you can get them from Amazon). I did not pull apart the tail gate strip - but when you pull the panel /reinstall the panel, I would be extra careful just so the strip doesn't come loose.

Larry, you have to do all of the steps in the photos in order to be able to remove the rear part of the side panel. And yes, I only pulled back the rear of the panel.

Thanks for that. I sat in the back of trunk and blasted music. Turns out it wasn’t from the subwoofer but rather the inside of the liftgate. I used some foam tape on the inside of the liftgate paneling and that seemed to fix it.
