I met up with @Nklem in his 21 Mustang Mach-E, as well as a few other EV lovers who own not only Mach-E's but also and ID4 AWD and a Hyundai Ioniq 5. We did a highway range / efficiency test, and I have posted a video of our findings and my impressions of the competition.

Boring Excel Charts and Data.

1st we all charged up, not too 100% but > 85%. This shows the difference between the on screen display % and what the "true" value is but using and OBDII adaptor. I have given each cars "usable" or marketed battery capacity

After we did our road-trip you can see the efficiency vs EPA estimates. Even under these conditions, the Ioniq 5 came closest to it's EPA rating.

Based on these efficiencies. The Ioniq 5 outperformed the MME Premium by 2% while having 14% less battery capacity. The Ioniq 5 also beat the the ID4 (~9%) while having an almost equal battery size. I attribute much of this to it being the only vehicle with a heat pump, and being able to turn off the front motor when not needed, while only being slightly lighter. Using the 38F Scanned data.

Thanks for this. Must have taken a lot of effort. But very useful. Getting 3.8 mi/kwh in 60 degrees in my ioniq 5 AWD in sport mode. I'm not surprised it got the best efficiency. Did everyone have the same climate setting in your test?

Thanks for the comparison. I became a Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ltd owner recently but retain my months old MME order (which I may receive next summer/fall.) The pano roof window appeals to me and the Ioniq 5 has an electric sunshade for it. If you care about such details, you'd have to buy a 3rd party shade for MME pano roof window. Also, I like the teal/green Hyundai offer as much as the rapid red that Ford offers. I never managed to see a Ford iced blue silver paint job to know if it appealed or not. The two years of free charging at Electrify America chargers also did appeal to me along with Ioniq 5's "fast charge", although I still haven't used it in first week of ownership. MME would be very good with home charging if a 50amp circuit (with 14-50 plug) is installed for use with stock MME EVSE. Ioniq 5 requires 3rd party home-charging EVSE and 240v circuit, since it only comes with slow 110v wall socket EVSE. The Ioniq 5 has lots of acceleration, but so does MME. MME flunked the "moose test" but Ioniq 5 did not. There's a lot to like about both.

Yes, climate settings were identical.

It’s important to note this was a Winter highway range test at 35F and 38F temps in New England at 70 MPH and 70F cabin temps.

The Hyundai does have a few features to boost range. It was in ECO mode, so battery conditioning was not occurring. The Mach E conditions the battery as needed. The Hyundai also has a front motor disconnect clutch, so less rolling resistance. Finally , the Hyundai was released nearly a year after the Mach E. It should have improvements to better efficiency.

All in all I thought the test went as expected. On our drive to the test site, it started out at 11F and involved 50 miles of highway travel. The Mach E Premium ER averaged 2.1 Mi/kWh while the Hyundai did 2.3.

The temps were fairly moderate which exemplified the heat pump in the Ioniq 5. As we neared freezing, the performance was very close only a few tenths of mi/kWh.

One important note is both Mach E’s were on aftermarket tires, one with non-EV oversized tires and the other on Premium with Snows.

I may repeat the run on OEM tires if temps are the same soon. I tried to get my OEMs mounted in time but could not.

Thanks! Meeting some new people, and chatting about EVs wasn't too much effort.

Yeah that is kind of my point of the video - You can't pick the "wrong" EV. Plus so many more on the way. While the MACH-E out performs the EPA ratting in good weather, I am interested if that range bump the gave the 22 models also beats it of is that is closer to real world value. Ford will get it right, but they need a touch more efficiency

If you want pure value - VW ID.4 Hands down. If efficiency/range and charging curve are most important - Ioniq 5. If you're like me and buy on looks (this is a personal preference) The mustang mach-e wins, I would say the interior feels more premium. I didn't get a chance to beat of the other cars ... I feel like the mustang is more fun to drive. Moose test has never played into my buying decision

2022 Mach-E Premium AWD ER - Grabber Blue

An EV association in Quebec decided to test 21 electric cars this winter with temperatures of -16°C (3°F). The Mach-E AWD 2022 was the worst of the batch, clocking an impressive 35.1 kWh/100 km. It is on par with real life mileage I'm getting. During winter, I can't drive more than 200 km with my Mach-E Select AWD, and I usually get 35-40 kWh/ 100 km when it's really cold out there, and I often lose heating on the road when it's -21°C and colder (-6°F and colder).

I'll leave the chart below so you can compare. Link to the test is in French.

Yes - just throwing a big battery at it doesn't solve the problem. All of the top 10 or so have been making EVs for a while, while the new entrants have some efficiency specs they need to iron out. They will get there - Efficiency and charging curve will become the MPG , whikle 0-60 time will be the new horsepower, ultimately we need affordable cars though.

Hands down? I knew the VW was a few bucks cheaper, but thought the price differences were modest.
$605 per Kwh for the "AWD pro" spec. a barebones Select AWD would be about $1K more than the ID4 and be ~ $701 per Kwh. I haven't pulled pricing data for all specs and configurations. My Select is the highest price per Kwh of all besides Model y

The 2022 MME Select has a similar EPA rating to the 21-22 ID4.

I like the Ionic5 looks but the cargo is too small to hold all the soccer gear for practices. The ID4 never really appealed.

To offer another data point:

The cost of my Lexus, in $ per kWh, is undefined.
