Most Tesla Destination Chargers are found at public locations such as hotels, community centers, tourist offices, etc and the power is being supplied and paid by those locations, not by Tesla, so they don’t care what car is connected. The adapter is just a plug converter. I have used them many times with my Taycan and an adapter with no problem. They are essentially a level 2 charger, but with higher amps 80-100) so are usually faster than say a Chargepoint that might be next to them. I have even tried one in the parking lot behind a Tesla store (as an experiment). You can also use the adapter at a Tesla-owning friend’s house!
Oh of course. I never said Tesla runs them or that people shouldn't use them, just that I personally would not ever use a Tesla to J1772 adapter, as I respect Tesla's connector IP even though I despise that they use it in the first place.

It's ok to use the adapter. As it also allows you to reach places that your BEV might not be able to go to. We are taking a trip like that this weekend to the lake. The only charger there is a tesla level 2 and the place that has it said yes that's fine. They even have a tesla tap for people that don't can use it for free as they put in two level 2 Tesla chargers.

The Freddy's here also just put in 3-tesla chargers and they are brand new. No software problem or people having a problem with using them.

Really it's worth its weight in gold as you might be on a trip somewhere or want to go to a different place and now you can with the tesla tap or another adapter.

A common configuration for hotels where I am are two destination connectors and one J1772 connector. If the J1772 is being used or out of service, being able to use the destination connector would be useful.

Also the destination charger is usually higher power, so that might be a consideration as well.

correct and maybe the place you're going the charger that the mache can use without the tap is not working. but there is a tesla level 2 close by. problem solved. really it's a no-brainer to have one. I ordered mine yesterday.

I was just at a brand new hotel with only one charger -- Tesla Destination charger. It was great to have the option of using my TeslaTap.

The better setup at another hotel was a pair of high-speed Clipper Creeks and a pair of Tesla Destination chargers. They're ready for the BEV revolution!

Here's the shot of Marlin feeding at a Tesla trough at the Tru Hotel outside Florence, SC. Two Tesla destination chargers, no J-1772s.

Look at all the other places now you can go and travel because you have a tesla tap. It's crazy not to have one in your Mache. 1. gives your more options and routes you can take your BEV.

2. It's a backup if your other EV charging station does not work but there is a tesla level 2 nearby.
Everyone should have one it's just as important as having a spare tire back in the day.

Here is a look at the map.

Now plug and share map also shows the rest but many places there are only a tesla leve 2 charger.

This is (apparently) not quite the way the Wall Connectors work.

Tesla Wall Connectors will initially attempt two way communicate using Tesla's proprietary method, and will then fall back to the J1772 standard 1 KHz signalling. Only the latest generation Connectors have a jumper setting to disallow the fall-back signalling method.

Similarly the cars will respond to both the Tesla communication and standard J1772 1 KHz signal, which allows a passive ("wires" only) J1772 adapter.
Tesla made several variants of the Gen 2 HPWC; on the earlier variants, there is a dip switch that allows the HPWC to be switched into "legacy mode."

However, on some Gen 2 HPWC, the EVSE ignores the state of the dip switch and always operates in Tesla mode. And there are also some Gen 2 HPWC that don't have the dip switch at all.

Tesla may have updated the firmware on the Gen 2 HPWC to ignore the dip switch, and then they removed the dip switch altogether.

When the dip switch is in Tesla mode, the HPWC uses Single Wire CAN (SWCAN) instead of the Control Pilot signal used in the J1772 standard. SWCAN allows Tesla to use their cars to update the firmware on the HPWC.

Even when Tesla mode, the HPWC usually works with most EVSE. That is because, at least in theory, the HPWC is supposed switch to Control Pilot signaling when SWCAN fails. But, there are many firmware variants and who knows how well they were tested. Tesla certainly doesn't have much incentive to make sure that their EVSEs work on other vehicles.

And it always certainly possible that one day, intentionally or not, Tesla updates the firmware on the Gen 2 HPWC to not work well on other EVSEs. I've actually already seen them update the firmware on Tesla UMC; the car actually displays a "Charge connector update in progress" message.

In the early days, Tesla provided and installed Destination Chargers for establishments for free. Also, in the early days, Tesla would also provide the establish with a free Clipper Creek EVSE for other EVs (that is why you see so many Clipper Creek EVSEs installed with Tesla EVSEs. Later on, they only provided Tesla EVSEs for free, but the establishments had to pay to install them.

BTW, this is the 50A TeslaTap. It is plenty heavy enough if you only expect to use Tesla Destination Chargers intermittently (per the owner of the company that makes the TeslaTap). While bulkier than the mini, it fits fine under the rear floor (in the down position) inside the foam cutout with the provided Ford Mobile Charger. It's also a lot cheaper than the 80 or the mini.

My recommendation is to add two locks. Will insure the Tap doesn't walk off and that an annoyed Tesla owner doesn't try to unplug your vehicle. You can get them later or from somewhere else but it's cheap and easy to add them to the order.(FWIW I didn't).
