Subaru Outback is close in size and function, 5 passenger, AWD smallish SUV., no where close on performance. On road, Mach e for the win, off-road goes to the Subaru. This is a cheesy video I made of an image fade on power point. The biggest size differences are the ground clearance the rear overhang.

This is a question with many “it depends.” Ultimately if you’re factoring in performance, very few ICE SUVs or wagons compare, particularly to the GT. If you’re looking at space/utility and luxury, but ignoring performances that changes things a lot. If performance wasn’t an aspect of this, I’d say Mazda CX5 or CX-50 is a lot closer steering wise, interior material quality, and feature wise than a BMW X4m, but once you add performance to the equation, the Mazdas are very slow; even with their Turbo engines. In terms of driving enjoyment, no Toyota or Lexus should be in the mix here. So it really does depend.

Rav4? Not even close, small, slow, ugly, basically a large prius, and lacking luxury.

I would say more of a 5 series wagon, or an A6 wagon. Thats generally what I tell folks.

My Chevy Bolt Premier is much more in line with a Rav4
As someone who owned a first generation RAV4, and owned 2 different generations of Prii, and rented later generations of both, I can say without hesitation that the RAV4 has nothing in common with the Prius. And can hardly be called small or slow in its current incarnation. The plug-in variant of the RAV4 does 0-50 in 5.4 seconds and has plenty of high end tech. The non-plug-in hybrid variant turns in a 7.3 seconds 0-60 time. The regular gas version is 8 seconds.

Slow is a relative term.

Those numbers are respectable for a regular SUV but very slow compared to the Mach E.

My wife has an outback and there simply is no comparison. The outback is phenomenal for offroad family utility. It has full SUV ground clearance, it can tow, it can take a roof box easily and it has a huge rear hatch for our 100 lbs dog + all of our gear. The Mach-E stays home for camping trips but the outback really handles like a pig on the road. The turbo engine is great for an ICE family car though. No comparison in performance to the MME GT

So what is slow in this context? My Premium RWD clocks in at 6 seconds. That's faster than a lot of cars out there, including a lot of old-school ICE Mustangs. But by some people's measure, my Mach-E is slow.

In Mach E context, that’s the slowest one.

Again, slow is relative. It just depends on what you’re comparing it to.

There exists a “slowest Ferrari.”

From a performance standpoint, the most comparable ICE vehicle to a Mach-E GT is the base model Lamborghini Urus or Audi RSQ8.

https://fastestlaps.com/comparisons/pzel4irfdi88

The handling numbers are similar and the the new 2024-25 GTs will do the quarter mile in under 12 seconds.

Here's a size comparison

You’re not wrong. Especially in terms of raw data.

When the Mach E GTPE came out in 2021, the only SUV that had both a higher skidpad and better braking distance was the URUS. Even the BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne turbo etc didn’t hit those marks.

Yet all everyone talked about was the power cut. (Even though the 0-60 and 1/4 mile still put us near the top of the pack even with the cut).

Now with the power cut “fixed,” I still don’t think we get much credit for how much of a performance SUV it is.

It keeps up with a Lamborghini for goodness sake!

Exactly... And this is precisely why I believe that the 2024+ models without the power cut, should be compared in head to head matchup against these upcoming suvs. I really love to see the new track performance data. *Crosses fingers*

Seems reviewers have “moved on” from caring about our car.

Zero Dyno tests on a GT since 2021.

Zero acceleration tests on a 2024+ premium 4x (0-60 in 4.1 estimated).

No track tests

Super rare to see a side by side acceleration test.

For something this fast, and a pretty common vehicle, I’ve never seen so little performance data.

Our second vehicle is a CX-5 with the turbo. My select (base) Mach-e does zero to sixty in 6.3 seconds, which happens to be identical to the CX-5 2.5T

They're also nearly identical in size, with the Mach-e seeming slightly roomier in the back seat and the CX-5 having a more traditional SUV shape/size trunk. The touchscreen in the Mach-e is preferable to the clumsy but functional Mazda infotainment. Both have similar quality factory stereos, with a nod to the Mach-e for being just a bit better in terms of clarity and volume.

The Mach-e costs more, because of course it does (EV batteries still aren't cheap). But not a lot more. Similar safety features at the price point. Mach-e has the 360 view and steer assist, CX-5 only has lane monitoring.

The CX-5 awd system is solid, we've used it to access remote areas. My select is rwd only, and clearance not as good (I believe, need to check that actually). The awd Mach-e only pushes the price further upscale, and eats into any noted advantages above.

AWD was a $2800 option on my select that boosted torque over 100 ft-lbs and cut 0-60 a full sec. In new england we are having snow a few times a week and the car is a tank. I wouldnt dismiss the AWD. Also ICE performance is different, if you floor it off of every light your tranny will be slipping, and you will be spending money to replace many parts at low miles. You will also get noticed by police when your CX-5 hits 7k RPMs. None of that with an EV, abuse it daily and enjoy.

It's not dismissal, it's the fact the Mach-e costs more and awd adds on top of that already higher price tag. When shopping for a vehicle the cost matters (a lot), so making comparisons without taking cost into consideration aren't accurate comparisons.

If not for the generous lease deal, I would have bought another ICE vehicle at a lower cost.
