This past Monday I was driving to work (2021 Select AWD) and when I pulled into the parking lot, all of a sudden I got multiple alerts, starting with Powertrain Malfunction. I shut the car off and left it for a couple hours. When I turned it back on, the alerts had cleared, but as soon as I started moving, I could hear a grinding noise. I had it towed to my dealership that day.

I finally heard back from the dealership this morning (Friday) and they said it was a problem with the motor and that it was not drivable (I forget the exact words he used). He told me this was a rare issue and that the part is essentially made-to-order and not readily available. He said he needed to reach out to Ford about the part and that he would call me back this afternoon with more specifics. I didn't get a call. I left him a voicemail and I'll try again tomorrow.

I'm just curious if anyone has dealt with motor issues and how long I might expect to be waiting. I asked about a rental or what I could do in the meantime and got a vague uncertain reply. He said he would need to contact Ford first. So here I wait.

My main issue is that my job is 30 miles away and I really can't afford to miss work or to pay for a rental car for a month (or longer). What are my options? I've thankfully not had a lot of car troubles in my life and this is the first time I've had to deal with a vehicle that legitimately shut down and became unusable to me.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Don’t wait for your dealer to contact Ford. Call the Ford BEV team at 1 (800) 392-3673 and open a case. Tell them you need a rental.

I had a similar problem with the front motor failing. If they tell you that they will reimburse you for a rental. Make sure you get a Ford. They told me after the fact. The repair took 44 days. Some folks reported it quicker. Good luck.

This... But Ford will only reimburse you 35$/day. And yes, they will only pay that if you rent a ford product.

Have you asked your dealer if they have a loaner.

I have a 2022 SE AWD. At about 6k miles I started getting SVS and powertrain warnings, yet the car drove fine. Took it to the dealer, who immediatly gave me a brand new Escape loaner. The rear motor needed replacement. After four weeks the motor arrived on a Friday and the dealer told me the car would be done on Monday. They called on Monday and said the new motor was damaged so they ordered a new one. Two weeks later the car repairs were complete. I now have 19k miles and no more problems. Kudos to the dealer (Van Bortel Ford in Rochester NY) for their great no-hassle service.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still waiting to hear back from the dealership. I called Ford Customer service and they opened a case and said I would hear back from them on Monday, and that I should be able to get a rental, but no specific details. When I had asked about a rental/loaner from the dealership I didn't get a straight answer, it was more of a "let me talk to Ford and see what they say" response.

I also asked the Customer Service rep if they had any information about my car and he said he wasn't able to see anything from the dealership specifically. He offered to look up the part availability if I had a part number, but I don't know what the exact part is, so that didn't do much for me.

I have not had a motor issue, thankfully. Though I had my car in the shop twice for extended periods and dealt with the rental process. I see two people here have said they will only reimburse a ford rental. However, I had a Corolla, Polestar 2, and a Chevy Traverse as rentals and was reimbursed up to $40 a day. The really crappy part is that you have to pay up front yourself and then submit all the paperwork, including gas you buy, and then wait for the money back. The other unfortunate part was the way they reimbursed me: a gift card that I couldn’t use to pay toward my credit card I used to pay for the rentals.

the Ford reps will also tell you that “all dealerships have the ability to provide a loaner car.” And, with this being my 5th Ford, the loaner program is a dealer discretion. Best of luck to you.

Make sure to talk to the BEV team, an not just ford customer service.

Edit: nvm I just got an email from a BEV team member in response to my case. They're attempting to contact the dealership.

Good to hear, I had great experience with the BEV team.
If you talked to the BEV team initially, that person will handle your case until your car is fix. She gave me her extension where I could call or text her to get update. She also kept me in the loop of what was happening at the dealership. She even called and follow up after I got my car back, and as a gesture of good will, gave me a free extended warranty. Can't say enough about how well my experience went.
