Firstly, before everyone piles on, I understand the quirks of the 'guess o meter' and the variations in EV range, but my first week with my Standard Range RWD has been underwhelming and just wondering whether anyone else has experienced such a low range. I apologise in advance if this feels like deja vu.

This week, we charged to 73% and the car estimated 144 mile range; so circa 197 miles on a full charge - something I can accept in the winter. However, we drove 29 miles on the motorway and the battery fell to 48% estimating 92 miles - a 52 mile drop!. The following day, it used 38% battery to do 44 miles over the day (half in slow moving rush hour traffic in the morning). Then yesterday, my wife did 19 miles in slow town traffic and the car used 16% charge - with the range falling 56 miles from its initial estimate. I'm not a maths whizz, but I work out that the car is currently doing around 115 miles to a full charge. This is obviously well over half Ford's estimate for the standard range and more in line with BEVs from ten years ago.

I'm loving the car, but could do with getting my head around this.

The wonderful world of EV range..

I can't add much apart from the fact I've had my Mach e extended range RWD for just over a year now and have covered 22k miles in it through both last winter and this summer. Best range I've ever got taking it to 100% on my home charger was 367miles (just under the claimed range for my car) but the worst was last winter in the cold when I got 178miles on a full charge. I then drove to York for a meeting (I’m in Staffordshire) and had to charge when I got to York and was almost on zero miles when I got home. No heated steering wheel, no heated seats and the temp in the cabin set at a reasonable 21c.

I do find the "e heat" button in the climate control function has a massive impact on range and battery use and when in use and have some of the ancillaries on (mentioned above) it can take around 25% of the battery use.

Ran diesels for years before making the switch to EV and if you put a full tank of dinosaur juice in either the summer or the winter the range was roughly the same!

Not sure if this helps or not...

It does. My Dad has had EVs for years and says it varies massively in Winter so have been prepared for it. I have a trip to the North East at the weekend from Manchester, and in theory, I should at least get there on a single charge - but given the first week, I'm suspecting I won't. I must look up the 'eheat' setting too.

I have a 2022 RWD SR as a company car, got it on December 2nd last year, done 21k miles.

Looking back at my figures, I was getting around 200 to start with, and through January last year.
Spring, summer autumn I was getting 250-275 comfortably.

Mine has dropped noticeably over the last couple of weeks - I've just charged to 100% at home and it is showing 203, however in reality when I calculate my range when driving (% x m/kwh for the trip) it is typically working out at 10-15% more then the car shows, so I have learned to rely less on the cars "range" figure.

The heater is a killer though, it really does cane the range.

Yeah, you see I was expecting 200 ish in this weather and I based all my calculations of costs etc before I took out the lease but at the moment I've been way off.

Worked out that so far, based on the miles done since it was delivered, to the amount of charge its had since Friday, the car has done 1.4 m/kwh. That would mean I've been actually getting less than 100 miles to a full charge. I clearly need to figure out what's draining battery power

I noticed a difference moving to 6.6. Before the update said I had 320 range at 90%. After the update and not driving the car at all 90% said 278. I live in miami so cold is not a factor. Could it have been based on last drive efficiency vs a longer history ??

Maybe. I've only had the car for five days. I think I need to master preconditioning whilst sat on my drive and hopefully I'll see an uplift in efficiency.

That’s about what I was getting on my 2021 SR AWDs. 100-110 miles per 100% charge in 30-40 degree weather.

There was an update that improved the accuracy of the guess-o-meter, maybe you haven't gotten it yet. If your car is that new it may also need more driving history to give a more accurate range. In the winter, if you have heated seats/steering wheel, use them instead of eheat. It will make a big difference. Keep in mind that gas cars are also affected by driving speed, outside temp, climate settings, etc., but the loss in range is masked by the much higher inherent inefficiency.

Two other considerations are the wind and speed. The very first MME longer drive was approximately 2.5 hours or 140 miles each direction. Departed with 80% charge with wind pushing. Drove 75 mph resulting in 2.7 m/kW efficiency. I DCFC charged (redundant I know) to 80% prior to return trip but consistent 30 mph headwinds at 30 degrees F dropped efficiency to 1.6/kW. Reduced speed to 70 mph but should have reduced to probably 60 mph. Needed to charge at a L2 charger 10 miles from home to provide a comfort level that we could reach home. We now ALWAYS consider wind and driving speed.

All the best.

What do you set your climate at? I average about 1.8 mi/kWh here in Alaska during winter. I keep the temp at 68 and fan speed at 5 and seat at lowest setting. If I were going for distance I may set cabin lower. Many use Auto setting but I have been unable to keep from fogging up in Auto so my climate is set to manual. There is a large thread with cold weather strategies.

It is very cold here this week. Thanks - that’s reassuring that it’s not just mine.

I tend to set it to Auto
