We just got a whole boatload (Literally) of ev mass transit buses for the bus system out here. Interesting things happening.
We have four e-buses that just started in the County Fleet:

Montgomery County Introduces First Fully Electric Ride-On Buses

On September 3rd, Montgomery County officially launched the County's first four Ride On electric buses with a ceremonial "plugging in" event. In attendance at the event were Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich; County Council President Sidney Katz; Council Transportation and Environment Committee Chair Tom Hucker; Department of General Services Director David Dise; and Department of Transportation Director Chris Conklin. In September 2017, the County was awarded $1.75 million from the Federal Transit Administration Low or No Emission Competitive program to purchase four electric buses and charging stations.

This event helped kick off Montgomery County's goal of going to 100% electric buses in the future. These four buses have a 120-mile range and will run on routes in Takoma Park and Silver Spring.

It’s Friday, October 2, and New York City’s garbage trucks are going green.
Beacon-10-2-20-v2.jpg

Have you ever been nestled in bed in the early hours of the morning, only to be jolted awake by the clanking and beeping of a massive, exhaust-spewing garbage truck? Me too, and it’s no fun.
But what if that truck were quieter — and weren’t emitting those horrible fumes?

That’s the idea behind a new pilot project in New York City. The city’s Department of Sanitation is experimenting with a fully electric garbage truck, developed by Mack, which is currently cruising the streets of Brooklyn.

Electric garbage trucks may seem like small potatoes in the fight against climate change, but they’re actually a pretty big deal. The average trash-collecting truck averages just three miles per gallon of diesel fuel. That means it gobbles up around $42,000 in fuel costs in just a single year!

Garbage trucks also stop and start a lot, which makes them prime candidates for electrification: Each time a truck slows down, regenerative braking can charge the battery.

There’s only one truck in the New York City fleet so far, but the city can immediately order more if the trial goes well. And it’s not just about saving money: Electric trucks would also cut down on choking air pollution. “This is an environmental justice issue and a quality-of-life issue,” said Joshua Goodman, a Department of Sanitation spokesperson.

As long as it's a short range application like that. Anything that needs to go much further is a problem though.
?Go Greyhound
And leave the charging to us ?

Someday maybe. ?

It's a city bus, so short hauls at city street speeds with lots of stops. I'm sure they targeted mileage to their normal needs. I want to learn more about them, such as recharge time, recharge scheduling, etc.

Well from what I have read you are savings on gas or diesel and maintenance cost of course, just the same has an EV car. I live in a rural area and I see them around here even with our cold winter. Don't forget that buses stops regularly and thus regenerating a lot of their power. I believe the company specialist are going and analysing the needs of the school board or scholl bus companies.
You have electric school buses in Quebec? Now you are really shaming us :(.

Granted, I get all that . . . just like car BEV's schools may be even SLOWER to accept this kind of change, and they will want to know it is from a reputable manufacturer. I wonder how big those packs are? Lots of room under that bus for a huge pack. I also wonder how districts that use them charge - bigger packs like that would require more power to charge overnight. DEFINITELY worth looking into though.
A pack each axle with each feeding two electric motors one each wheel. Image smart transports where they have packs under the trailers and when hooked up are commanded by the cab processor.

Doubting Thomas. Wait for it.

I didn't doubt anything. Just saying it's of limited use right now. I like to be realistic.

Doesn't mean they won't get better in the future.

Well, no, we don't know what reality will be in 30 years either. But that's irrelevant to the point anyway. We're talking about now. And now, they have 120 miles of range (as stated in the article). That's the reality. Nothing controversial about that, it's just fact.

Some see things for what they are; others see them for what they can be. Innovation and change will come from the later. Clean transportation needs to be accompanied by clean power gen to charge them. It can be done and with the growing group that see it as possible it is becoming more plausible. This 8086 computer running IBM DOS 3.2 will never be a good gaming machine, it just does not have the power.

It is correct that we need clean power generation for a clean future. California understand that and it will not come from fields of panels or windmills that have there own environmental impact. Which comes first is not as important. Coal burning must also come to an end.
