Indeed. I would love to strip this thing down to the bare source code and find all of the real problems for them and I have the skillset to do so. But who's supposed to be paying who in that scenario? And that would be a helluva lot more expensive than the car payment. That sure as hell ain't going to happen in the back of any local dealership.[Linux Admin] oh lordy.
Their remote start design was nice until it just stopped working. The phone app has to communicate through the cloud API's and the car is hitting the cloud via its LTE modem so it actually doesn't connect to the phone over the web. This works anywhere in the world with cloud connectivity and it switches to a direct bluetooth connection when the phone is near the car. It's a decent idea. The darkened options on the app let you know exactly when you are out of range to control the car directly and the basic options are always available from the cloud connection. Those bluetooth features are still working, it's just the "Bluetooth as a Key" that is gone. This means that even if you use the remote start, you still cannot drive it. We only have the 1 fob and it's my wife's car so I was just happily using my phone as a key. For a car this expensive, we would normally never accept only 1 keyfob but it didn't matter because bluetooth is here! Luckily when it glitched it stranded me in our driveway and not some other random place. I think my wife's app with owner rights can override that remotely and tell it to full start and drive from the cloud but I'm not sure.
You can in theory still get going by putting your back-up password in on the touchscreen. But again, this is just unacceptable for a luxury car less than 6 months in. Thankfully we now know about the issue. Frankly, we had set up our 13 y.o. daughter's phone as a key as well and explained to her that no laws of mankind apply when her personal safety is concerned. We will just ensure that she has access to real keyfobs in the future.
