While I like the Polestar 2 (best EV regen and one of the best handling EVs) the sales decline in the fourth quarter is dramatic. It seems Polestar has throttled production to prevent margin erosion (P2 depreciates the worst of all EVs IMO - along with the EQS and e-tron GT).

Polestar products are overpriced by $10-15k imo.

Anecdote: Not that I care about Poleatar while ever I have my beautiful MME, a salesman on the next Ionity at Gretna Green offered his very best selling line he must have to offer somebody who owns and drives a thing of infinite beauty: “it looks nothing like a Volvo” he pronounced which I thought an odd thing to say about a car as if looking or being like a Volvo was a bad thing especially that they are made by the same group, he became pissed off when I squinted my eyes looking at the back of his Polestar and offered “well, it so does look like a Volvo to me”?

Do you have a rental yet? Ask for an EV. I know when I rented the Polestar 2 from Enterprise in Austin the other P2s were being rented by Tesla owners who their cars in the shop lol. Paid for by insurance of course.

Could be the tarriffs.

Here's the thing... EV sales are NOT declining in the US. Slowing a little sure. Every carmaker had double digit growth or a large Q4 sales spike. Polestar had a massive decline and I argue they are the weakest of the EV carmakers next to Lucid.

Nah, they don’t have parts yet, so don’t have a rental at the moment. I’ve never seen a Polestar on the lots of the Enterprises around here, but I do see quite a few driving around and I don’t think it’s cause people are buying them, maybe they are just being used a lot.

Your “best handling EVs” comment got me curious so I did some googling.

While the skidpad numbers are decent the reviews of the handling are

. Extremely negative

https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/2021-polestar-2-pros-and-cons-review/

“
A stiff ride would be forgiven if there were some kind of handling trade-off, but there isn't one there, either. The overarching Polestar 2 drive experience is more that of a stiffly sprung SUV than a luxury sport compact. Testing director Kim Reynolds noted that the 2 "understeers more than I'd like; you have to be careful to be very polite with the right foot, or it will abruptly understeer wide."

The exceptional Polestar 1 had our hopes set high for the 2, but unfortunately it doesn't measure up just yet.”

you can get a loaded 22 P2 with low miles for $30-$35K. If I am in the market for an EV now, lightly used p2 would be my top choice. I think the car is just overpriced at MSRP. The upcoming p3 is $85K. I doubt it will sell well. EVs from china are supposed to be cheaper. Not sure if tariff affects it much or just corporate greed.

That review is 3.5 years old and the Launch Edition hasn't been available for 2.5 to 3 years now. I don't know what tires they used on the Performance trim.

Motortrend reviewed a 24 P2 but there have only been increment changes compared to the version I drove.

https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/2024-polestar-2-awd-first-test-review/

"One Car of the Year judge called it possibly the best performance EV at the event."

My biggest beef with the GT PE I've owned was the sheer weight. It was a sled around a corner. I test drove a M3P recently and reminded how much I prefer a lighter nimbler EV - even though I'm not interested in owning another Tesla unless they re-add features they removed.

Yeah I read that newer review as well. Summary seemed to be that it’s better balanced but puts up worse numbers (skidpad) than the old one. But like I posted in the review of the old one, they REALLY didn’t like the suspension on that one so anything seems like an improvement.

Either way, neither made me conclude it was one of the best. ?‍♂

I would be curious which other performance EVs were at the car of the year event.

For that “award,” they only consider new models or significantly changed that year so the YP and GTPE wouldn’t be eligible.

I didn't say I liked the suspension either lol

It is brutal to put it lightly. I rented a fully loaded P2 for 10 days and mostly sat in the passenger for the last 2 days and could not even hold a coffee in my hand while I let my brother drive. The stiffest suspension I've experienced outside of a dedicated track car. They must have set the Ohlins to the lowest/stiffest setting because I had test driven a loaded P2 a few months before that and it was smooth.

The wind and road noise were terrible in the P2. I complain about it on the Mach-E but it was 3x worse on the Polestar. The new one is 2-3 dB lower but the 2022 I drove was LOUD for an EV.
