Hi forum,

Will possibly be taking home a Mach E Rally on Saturday.
What's the current go to in terms of a home charger? I live in a townhome that would require some work from the box in the basement to the garage. Is it worth having Ford do it? Or would I have better luck finding it on my own and having someone install/possibly DIY with some help? Trying to figure out the best option and with some potential thought of moving in the next few years. Thanks!

Are you talking about ford installing the ford charger (evse) for free as part of purchase? I would guess they'd subcontract that out to a local electrician. So don't see that as being a problem.

More that I believe you can have some amount taken off of it if you opt out of having them do it. I may be mistaken but that's what I want to make sure

Yes, they offer bonus cash for the EVSE delete, but you will likely shell out more than that to buy a comparable unit and have it installed, unless you are in good with an licensed electrician. ??

Ford pro charger uses ccs1 right? Is there a nacs AC adapter for this yet? That would be on my mind. There is a reason they are giving them away. If you get a lightning it has V2G, if you have a significant chance of buying a nacs car in the next couple years just think about it. It is a competent charging station though.

I'd check with an electrician with EV experience to see what they charge. Install of the nema 14-50 only cost me around $350 but my garage was new with the box right there and they only ran a very short line from the box to the plug. Also, check with your local utility to see if they offer any evses (chargers) at a discount.

Check to see if you would be eligible for charger installation rebate. Unless you're a licensed electrician, scratch DIY as an option.

I agree with this. My install was $200 for the electrician, but my charger is right next to the panel. $600 for the charger, taking the $2k obviously would have been a better deal.

Mine was probably half that $2000 for the charger and the install combined. Though a lot of it may come down to how much copper/cable you need to run to where your charger will be located. I also got my charger on sale (I think it was $400 for the Chargepoint at the time) and just needed the outlet.

The Ford charger uses J1772 (CCS is a DC standard). There are tons of J1772 to NACS adapters available. Teslas come with them standard.

There are 3 Ford branded chargers:

Ford Mobile Charger - 32 amps on Mach-e, 30 amps on Lightning. Uses J-1772.
Ford Connected Charge Station - 48amps hardwired. Uses J-1772.
Ford Charge Station Pro - up to 80amps hardwired. Uses J-1772, but plug to vehicle is the same as CCS1, because of the capability with the Lightning to power the home. Therefore, this plug will NOT work with vehicles that are J-1772 only, like a PHEV.

It does, but it doesn't. Therefore, if one wants to charge their PHEV, it's a challenge. Adapters don't fit without modification.
