Preconditioning doesn't usually do anything in the summer because the battery is already warm enough, but anytime the battery temp is below about 70ºF it does help to speed up charging times. The colder it is, the more beneficial en-route preconditioning becomes. In temps below freezing it becomes very necessary to avoid a slow session.
In the summer you do not want the battery above 90F for charging. Not sure how the MME handles that, but with my Rivian and Hummer they cool the battery during pre-conditioning, in the summer. Both those vehicles have an indication of pre-conditioning being active and the Hummer even has a manual pre-conditioning feature.

The 5kWh heater in my '22, (7kWh in the newer) is shared between the passenger cabin and the battery. The passenger cabin has priority, not sure of the percentage is. If Ford would just add a manual precondition button we would have one less thing to complain about.
