Thankfully you did the right thing -- you didn't swerve or really try to avoid it. It's a shame to hit an animal in the road but even worse to risk your life to save the animal.

As a trauma nurse, people just don’t realize how many of my patients wouldn’t be my patients if they’d just hit the freakin’ animal. Too many people are left with permanent injuries trying to avoid a minor collision.
Of I could educate the public on 3 things:
1. Wear your seatbelt. I don’t care about that one guy your cousin knew who survived without his seatbelt.
2. Wear your helmet.
3. Just hit the f’in animal.

I've noticed a few animals (and people) don't seem to hear me approaching.

I think I've told this story on here before: in 2006, my very new 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid was run into by a deer. I didn't know wtf had happened, I thought maybe I was shot at or something because of the sound and initial damage I could see while driving. I was close to home so I finished going to the garage and took pictures while waiting for the police to arrive.

the car survived a lot better than I'm sure the deer did. modern cars are sort of amazing with how well they deal with these kinds of things.

In all my years of driving, I’ve never hit a deer. However I’ve been hit BY deer 6 times. It’s like they’re trying out for the NHL and shoulder check the doors or quarter panels.

the worst part is that they have a terrible slap shot, so they have no chance of making it in. just wasting time all around.
