After researching the cost to replace the battery someday, I found it to be in the $20K range. I am hoping batteries get better and less expensive soon. I would love to keep my MME for 10 years. How are extended warranties looking and Who has the best? Would love to cover the batter.

I def. want to be smart about not having to ever pay the high price to replace a batter. If none of this is plausible. When is the sweet spot to trade or sale? Considering the battery degradation as well over time.

EDIT: Is the battery warranty 3 years or 8 years?

Thanks!

Factory warranty is already 8 year / 100k miles. I would just stick to that. In 8 years, the technology will have improved a lot and you will likely want to upgrade anyways.

I don't believe any of the extended warranties available cover the battery or EV drivetrain components.

Great! Agree on the tech being better in 8 years. 5/6 years sounds like the sweet spot.

Ford and LG setup these batteries to be modular. So far, based on my own experience, I don't see massive battery degradation happening...so the odds of needing to replace an entire battery pack versus identifying and replacing just a problematic module seem small and pretty far out down the road.

according to my State of Health, I'm at 99% at 13k miles. If it's linear...that's suggesting over 90% capacity still at 100k miles based on how I use/charge my own MME. (100% AC Charging to 90% every day, always on the charger)

Lots of assumptions here....but it's the most logical theory based on what I have right now.

I agree. I'm pretty sure at least Ford and GM have already taken end of life into consideration when designing the battery packs. Batteries are expensive and full of expensive stuff. It would certainly behoove BEV makers to create a product that makes reclaiming the battery possible (i.e. makea is easier to replace).

I bought the extended warranty when I purchased the car because I figure there will probably be items that crop up in a Job 1 car after 3yr/36,000. Comments from Ford about the unnecessary engineering items in current models that they'll change in the future make me even more convinced that will be the case.

As mentioned before, the battery is covered for much longer. I fully expect that tech will make replacement much cheaper than it is right now.

So, I'm worried about the rest of the car more than I am the battery.

Barring some weird problem, your battery will outlast your ownership of the vehicle. If you were running the battery down to 10% and recharging to 100% every day, you would get at least 2,000 days (5.5 years) of battery life before its maximum capacity was reduced to 80% of original capacity.

If you're doing something more realistic like seeing a full recharge cycle around once a week, you will have something more like 38 years of battery use before reduction to 80%.

The battery will still be usable after it's down to 80% maximum capacity, it'll just have a slightly reduced range.

Lots of other things will wear out before the battery becomes an issue.

Yes, i read the same. Cali may be 10 years.
Careful when quoting California battery warranties. There is a separate warranty law that covers HYBRID batteries, which is 10yr/150k miles. That does not apply to EV Batteries.

Just checked and it appears that CA follows federal requirements, so 8 years/80K miles. I got 8-yr/100K ESP when I bought the car since there's so much tech in the car and I figured I'll want protection once the std 3-yr warranty expires... Should have got it from Granger, but didn't know about them so oh well 🤷🏼‍♂️

Is this your first new vehicle or just your first EV? I recommend you expect this car to have the same or even better reliability as ICE vehicles. If you have been buying new ICE vehicles and owning them long enough to require engine replacements then you might also need to be a little concerned about your EV power train as well.

If you have never had to replace an engine in your previous vehicles then I would bet that your battery in this EV is going to outlast your ownership.

Hope this helps.

First EV. I have never had to replace an engine. I can work on ICE cars. I am only concerned with the cost of EV electronics post warranty. I expect future repairs to be costly.
