I am thinking of upgrading from my Select to either a Premium 4 wheel drive or a California Route One 4 wheel drive.
On the Ford Configurator it shows a range of 270 miles for the Premium Extended range 4 wheel drive and a range of 300 miles for the Route One extended range 4 wheel drive.
I can’t imagine the aero wheels would make that big of a difference. Any thoughts?

The only real exterior difference is the wheels, but the real difference is in the standard running gear. The Rt. 1 comes standard RWD, so the range estimate is based on the single motor. The AWD version has the same range estimate as the Premium AWD.

The wheels are a smaller diameter (18" versus 19") and probably lighter. Tesla and Rivian both have different ranges for different wheel and tire sizes. The more weight toward the outer diameter, the more torque needed to overcome it.

For decades, there have been two reasons we put larger diameter wheels on race cars: To fit bigger brakes, and to cut unsprung weight. The construction of a tire is heavier than the construction of a wheel for a given radial section. Given the same OD, a tire with a larger ID is lighter than one with a smaller ID. Sure, a wheel with a larger bead diameter is going to be heavier than a wheel with a smaller bead diameter, but it is less incremental weight gained than what is lost in the tire.

Ford has not updated their range estimates for carryover models. The Rt1 AWD is new for 22, so it shows more range due to more of the battery being unlocked for 22. The AWD Premium eventually will show as having 279 miles of range.

It’s more complicated than that though. Rotating mass/ Polar moment of inertia comes into play as well. Mass closer to the hub is better than mass farther out. Think of a spinning figure skater: arms spread out, they rotate slower than when they pull their arms in tight. Larger diameter wheels have more of their mass towards the outside, and take more energy to spin up to speed.

Annnnd… There is less tire mass put there, which weighs more than the wheel.

This is the kind of sloppy marketing /communication that should never happen.

Look at only the 17s and 18s, since those 2 sizes kept the same tread width. 17" wheel and tire combo weighs 48 lbs, 18" wheel and tire combo weighs 51 lbs. Same wheel, same tires.
All wheels are not equal, different materials are often used in different sizes as well. Flow formed versus forged, as an example.

Rivian offers 3 sizes of wheels and the middle size actually has the longest range.

I just went with the California AWD model in lieu of the Premium AWD due to price and also the better range estimate. Can't believe the 300 mile range for the California AWD but hoping it ends up being that good!
