My family and I went on a road trip that had us driving for nearly 4 hours. My son, who is 18 yo, 6’1”, and weighs about 170 lbs, sat in the back. When we arrived, he tells me that it felt like he was sitting on a metal tube or something, on one half of the seat. When i sat in the seat, it felt okay mostly but you can feel some hardness on the one half side of the seat towards the middle. While standing outside the car, I pressed down around the seat with both hands using the weight of my body. I can really feel the hardness on the seat, and I can only describe it as feeling like there is plywood underneath the foam, but it’s only in the inner half of the seat. The outer half does not have this and it feels soft throughout.

Has anyone had rear passengers experience this or noticed this yourself? I am trying to get a sense to whether this is a defect or just how the seats are made.

May I ask a member to sit in the back and also try pressing down on the rear seat to see if they feel the similar hardness on the inner part of the seat?

I have a 2021 Premium Extended AWD built in December 2021.

Thanks!

I have a gtpe so seats are a little different but my wife actually prefers the back seat and falls asleep back there.

I have the same car, 2021, AWD Premium and have had my parents in the back for long trips and they are both very comfortable.

My son is 6’1” and 220lbs. He doesn’t mind the seat at all.

Zero complaints from my back seat riders. ,Many larger than he is. Maybe he wants you to get a Different EV?

I have a funny story. My 6’1” 260# HS football player went with us car shopping for a luxury Family Sedan back in 2014. So many cars had poor back seat “head room“ and the ONLY car that he “said“ was good was the Chrysler 300. We tried 10 or more different sedans (Cadillac CTS, Ford Fusion hybrid, Lincoln MK?, Lexus, infinity, a BMW etc). A few weeks later I bought a Chrysler 300 Hemi AWD Sedan. About 3-4 years ago he tells me that he wasn’t being truthful, he actually fit in all but made himself seem taller and really wanted us to get a 300 Chrysler HEMI……. No regrets though it was a fantastic fast reliable car….but still funny. He now has a Maverick Hybrid on order.

Hi

yesterday I took a trip in the back seat of my MME RWD JOB1 and I felt exactly what your son felt, the seat left hand side on back of the driver seat, I thought that was a problem of mine MME.
well another complaint for all of us costumers trying to feedback Ford about this..

It seems that’s how the seat is made and depending on your sensitivity you either feel it or not. I think it may be more noticeable when you hit a bump and you bounce on the seat. When you come down from the bounce, you can feel the hardness on one part of the seat as your weight pushes down. The seat is not as plush or comfortable as our 2014 Acura MDX, and this is all I have to compare it to at the moment.

I experienced the same with the back seat in my MME and was going to post about it, but you beat me too it! If you sit far enough back on the seat, the cushioning is fine. But if you sit toward the center or front of the seat, it feels like you are sitting on the edge of a metal box.

I watched the teardown video from Sandy Monroe on the back seat, and I believe we are feeling the forward and side edges of the sheet metal under the padding. It looks like the sheet metal actually bows down where the rear of the seat would be, hence the more forgiving feeling when you sit up straight. I just wrote it off as a posture issue, but maybe additional padding is in order.

I had not seen that tear down video and it now makes sense why I was feeling the softness or hardness around the seat area. Thanks for linking the video.

The Mach-e was my EV of choice when looking at new cars. The first thing I did when I saw one on a lot was put my wife in the front seat and I sat in the back. I was so incredibly disappointed I immediately scratched it off the list. After a month of looking at every other EV out there, I ended up circling back and ordering a Mach-e anyway. So Ive decided to just never sit there, but it is not your imagination. The back seat is an embarrassment… a complete tragedy. There in no padding at all, and when you take the seat out you can see the bump in the sheet metal you are talking about.

just because others have family members that don’t complain, doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck. I dunno, maybe they actually have an a$$, because I got no butt at all

Took a 3 hour round trip ride with 4 passengers and myself this past weekend. My wife sat in the middle back. Well , that will never happen again. Worst ride she ever had. Felt every single thing in the road. We took 90% secondary roads. My friend in the front passenger was pretty uncomfortable also but I think that was attributable to his kidney stone problems.

So I actually ended up trimming a 2" memory foam piece to fit below the back seat. Although it is not perfect (due to the necessary seat anchor points and my use of a bread knife), I can no longer feel the sheet metal under the padding.

I poked at my seats last night and can't really feel what's mentioned here. I have a 2021 job 2, I believe.
