I’ve always wondered, never asked, what do we think the reason for these little flare outs are for? Aerodynamics?

Definitely not for aero. Most likely to prevent kick-up of road junk onto the side of the car. 😊🐩

Well if it’s that then they are a huge failure lol. I’ve never seen the back of car get so dirty.

I am not a materials engineer, but I've suspected they were for adding rigidity/stability to the fender so it doesn't move as much in the wind. But I really don't know.

That’s a plausible reason

Old thread but ill give you guys the actual reason. I used to work at an audi dealership and all of them had little flares in the rear arches and they are not integrated like the one we have on our mach-e.

The sole reason for these is that the highway code doesn't allow wheel offset to poke out of the cars body (pedestrian safety), but on performace versions of these cars, the wheels are wider for stance and better handling. These little flares are considered part of the car body so even if the wheels are wider, this extra 2cm means that the car is still legal. 🙂

They are for aero. It’s a winglet that helps keep the turbulent flow around the wheel confined to the wheel well so it doesn’t disrupt the laminar flow of the air passing around the back corner of the car.

Thus applying a layer of smutz pulled from the underside of the car to the license plate area. Aero I say!
