Greetings. My '21 Premium EX AWD will be going into the shop to repair some minor damage to the front bumper after a car wash mishap. Repair will require the removal of the entire front bumper for repainting. As part of the repair estimate a $450 charge is included to recalibrate the front radar sensor, as will need to be disconnected and temporarily removed.

Is this recalibration entirely necessary? Thx.

When the radar sensors have lost communication with the car, the car requires that they be recalibrated or it will throw an error. The car is assuming that the sensor has been replaced (whether that is correct or not). 🤔🐩

If all they are doing is removing the front bumper cover to repaint, I do not see any reason they need to recalibrate the radar sensor as it is not attached to the bumper cover. The only things that are are the front camera and parking aid sensors. I have had the front bumper cover off of all three of my Mach-E's for one reason or another (modifications to the car, not an accident) and never recalibrated anything. Never got a warning message and cruise control and BlueCruise have always worked just fine.

Now, if you hav been getting warning messages about any of your driving functions because of the accident, then yes I would have it recalibrated.

The Ford repair manual for the Mach-E DOES NOT state anything about the radar sensor when removing and reinstalling the bumper cover. The only thing is states is you may have to realign the front camera if you get a warning that the camera is not functioning correctly.

I believe they are wanting to charge you for something that is definitely not necessary. I would tell them you do not want your radar sensor calibrated.

I forgot that if it’s just scratches/gouges to the bumper cover’s paint that the radar modules likely don’t need to be disconnected since only the bumper cover needs to be removed. 🤦‍♂️🐩

Here’s a question: If this is strictly cosmetic damage to the paint, have you considered using a mobile body shop? Back when my 2021 was new it’s front bumper cover was vandalized and a mobile body shop repaired the damage for less than my deductible where body shops wanted a few thousand just to R&R the bumper cover and paint it. They did this at my office and once they were done I could not tell where the damage was. 🤔🐩

If the sensor or the bumper bar it was mounted to was tweaked or bent in any way during a collision, then yes it should be recalibrated. The collision shop should ensure the sensor is still perfectly plumb. You can try skipping the recalibration, but if you get false collision alerts or the adaptive cruise control has issues, then it should be recalibrated.

For a simple remove and replace where everything is still in alignment, then no.
