Anyone else had this problem with their tailgate gas struts rusting? Just had my MY21 in to have the tailgate lights resealed due to water ingress (there is a TSB for this). There is a grommet just above the rusty bit which I presume when the tailgate was filled with water and the tailgate was closed could cause this issue. Dealer is waiting to hear back from Ford if my Ford Protect 8 year/100K mile extended warranty will cover the rusty gas struts otherwise it’s a £600 job!

The good news is that it's just the hardware for the pivot and the retainer. Not sure if you can get the pivot post and the clip separately though. ??

Agreed, the actual strut is fine. Just the clip and retainer pivot. Unfortunately I think it requires the whole strut replacing. Should find out from my dealer tomorrow and if it is covered by my extended warranty. Can only think it is a result of the water ingress through the tail lights which is a known problem. Will push back if they say it isn’t covered.

It looks like you have to either buy the damper or the damper mount

I seem to recall a very old thread about this or closely related to it.
Yes, me too but I couldn’t find it with the search terms ‘rusty’ and ‘strut’. Too many rusty disks and suspension strut messages were returned. ‘Tailgate’ returned too many comments related to the lack of kick-to-open ?

Yeah, that rear hatch gets a lot of water in it even out here in sunny California when you wash it always gets lots of water in the rear area. I don't know why leaks in that area not in the car, but it leaks a.

My car doesn’t have this problem. And I understand wanting Ford to make it right. But if it did have this problem, I’d be tempted to disassemble, brush, treat, paint, reassemble myself. I would spend less time than driving to the Ford dealership and back. And a whole lot less aggravating.

Glad to report that my Ford Protect extended warranty will cover the cost of replacing the struts. Car goes in next week for the repair. Shout out to Tracy at Peoples Ford in Bootle for all her help; sad that she is leaving them in next few weeks as she has always kept abreast of the latest in the Mach-E world. I understand she even peruses this forum ?
