Hey all,
This was forwarded to me by my son who owns a Tesla, but it looks like this proposed $200 annual fee would affect all ev owners in Texas, so you may want to give it a look and get in touch with your state rep or senator.
Ford Mustang Mach-E SB1728 Texas EV fee 1156d219-dcd3-42b8-8c08-269c2c83e84c
Hello,
Texas state legislators are considering SB 1728, a bill that proposes a $200 annual electric vehicle fee, which is almost double what the average driver pays and triple what some internal combustion engine vehicles pay in annual gas tax.
This fee is not about paying for your fair share of road maintenance and construction as an EV owner; instead this fee would force you, as an EV owner, to pay more than nearly every other driver of a conventional car or truck. EV drivers already pay a tax on the electricity used to power their vehicles, a tax not paid by other drivers, so this bill and unfair EV fee should be reconsidered by legislators.
Please consider contacting your State Senators and Representatives to tell them what this bill means to you as a Texas resident and EV owner. Make your voice heard and encourage your legislators to oppose SB 1728.

The bill has already passed the State Senate BTW. Focus attention on your House Representative and ask them to oppose this. Please call your Representative and urge them to oppose SB 1728. https://capitol.texas.gov/BillLookup/history.aspx?LegSess=87R&Bill=SB1728

Reasons for opposing it:
- Typical ICE vehicle pays around $103 in annual gas surchages, so this fee is a penalty for EVs.
- We pay taxes on our electricity that we use to charge our EVs, so this is a double taxation on EV owners.
- (Only use this on Democrats) We should be encouraging a move away from fossil fuels, and not penalizing EV owners, especially when it costs more up front to own an EV as it is.

I am glad that particular bill did not make it to vote. It was bad in that EV owners would be paying way more than equivalent size and weight ICE vehicles. Eventually we will have to pay some fee to offset the tax we are not paying on purchasing gasoline. I don't mind paying a fair share because both my vehicles contribute to the deterioration of the roads. Since that bill was going to increase the fee for above 9000 miles a year, it would be easy enough to develop a system based on miles driven and the listed vehicle weight on the state registration.
