Second Guessing my Order

Many companies offer charging as an employee benefit. And in some places there's govt incentives for them to do so. That said, I wouldn't suggest plugging in without asking if there's not an established policy. Of course if the company had an issue, they'd just ask you to stop.

I suspect that's where I get stuck in this question. If maximum savings was your objective then buying any new car is probably not the optimal path. I don't think we can put a dollar amount on how much more you will enjoy the Mach-E over those hybrid offerings.

There has been good info provided here on the charging times. I'd note that even if you had to spill over say 30 minutes into the higher rate it won't change that much on your total cost.

Agree with this sentiment. If the ultimate goal is cost minimization look for a used cheap EV with the required range and maximum efficiency.

I guess I stated it wrong. I am not trying to offset the "$30k" difference in cost 100%. I am just trying to minimize the extra hit.

My current car is a Mazda 3 with 245k miles so it will need replacing at some point, likely sooner than later. It gets ~30mpg and I have only replaced the serpentine belt, spark plugs and one coil pack in that time. I have replaced the brakes 3-4 times, easy freeway driving.

If I replaced it for the same thing I would be just over $900/month (payment and gas). The MME is about $1000/month (payment and electricity). At least that is what I have figured.

Yes I do have solar and basically balance out for the year, $100/year. Seeing TOU-5 at $.66 for summer On Peak is scary but I guess my solar should cover that.

What else should I be considering?

I’m curious as to why you are using an EV TOU with solar. If your panels produce during the low peak times you’ll need to produce 6x the power to cancel out your peak usage.
i couldn't find your plan description so it might work out. It definitely wouldn’t have been ideal with my EV rate plan. I switch to a regular tou 30something on off peak and 40something on peak. My panels produce at low peak which cancels out my charging and I only have a 10cent loss at peak.

My thought process is my solar cancels out my current usage so I wanted the cheapest cost to cover my charging. With what you have said that may not be the right way to go but then I will be paying closer to 30 or 40 something. At that cost the numbers change drastically.

Ah okay, I see where you’re coming from. You maybe on the right plan even if you lose a little return on production. I sized my solar for the vehicle. My normal usage was peanuts so it wasn’t much of a factor.

Just went on Tesla website and configured a Model Y. Same price as the MME EXT Range Premium. Delivery estimate is July which is about the same as the MME. Only exception is I ordered the MME 5 months ago and Tesla may still beat the MME. Tesla range and charging is definitely better. I'm leaning towards Tesla...

The MME has a tax credit. That's an extra $7.5k. Tesla raised prices by like $10k since start of 2021. Since I only went Premium SR, it's like $15k difference. You also should have price protection if you ordered by Dec? I think...That's like $2k. Add in the price diff and it's $13,390k? for MY vs non-AWD ER MME.

Just purchase whatever you like more honestly. There are enough complaints I've seen with Tesla's ordering lately too.

I traded in a Lexus UX F sport hybrid getting me about 42 mpg in the cold winter months. I had to put down extra money AND my payments went up about $150 per month for my GT. But I tell you, I had a huge smile on my face the moment I hit the accelerator driving out the dealership and haven’t stopped smiling since. I make excuses to go for a drive because it’s so much fun.

Don’t buy this car because it makes sense or because it’s cheaper. Go get a Nissan Leaf for that. Buy it because life is too short to spend 140 miles a day in a butt-ugly car that’s no fun.

Once I firgured out I could charge at home I placed my order for a 2022 CR1 AWD in Ice Blue Metalic. I also purchased a 40amp L2 charger. I have continued researching and adding to my spreadsheet, now not so sure it still pencils out.

I live in San Diego County with $4.15/gal gas. If I pay $16/month I can get electricity at $.10/kwh from 12am-6am M-F. I drive 140miles per day round trip for work, and have to leave my house by 5:30 am to be to work on time. Which means I would only have 5-1/2hrs of the cheapest rates to charge. Will that be enough time to charge it? Will the savings offset the higher cost of the MME compared to a $30k hybrid at 40mpg? (But damn the 40mpg hybrids are ugly)

Do it for the ecology and sheer joy. ?

You can't justify a $30k difference in savings. The Mach-E is much more fun to drive than any hybrid.
