I would not buy an EV without the federal credit, but you are delusional if you think the credit is a savings. BMW priced that i4 knowing full well you were working the credit into your bottom line. The $7,500 is a deal between the feds and the OEMs. You are paying full freight on the car.

Not necessarily true. BMW sells the i4 in other markets for a similar price (and without the same incentives). Also, the cost of the i4 M50 is in line with (actually, cheaper than) the M4 and other top spec 4 Series cars. Given the additional cost of the battery, BMW certainly isn't charging a premium. The cost of a mid spec i4 M50 is pretty close to a MME GTPE. I don't think there's any evidence that there are any deals between the feds and the OEMs on the prices of the cars, as it's mostly driven by the international market.

The evidence comes in price increases (or decreases) with and without the tax credit.

When Tesla’s credits ran out, they dropped the price of their cars.

Last year when they were fairly sure the credit was coming back, they significantly raised their prices in anticipation.

The end result of the credit is that it helps the car manufacturers make money when selling their BEVs at a “competitive price.” It doesn’t really save the consumer money when buying one.

International market car prices don’t affect what they sell for in the US. The same BMWs cost significantly different country to country.
