Has anyone used snow socks on their mach e? Would like to know how well they work in the snow.

I have a set of tire socks in my Lightning and in my wife's Highlander (same sock size as my old MME). I have never needed to use them, but they count as fulfilling the tire chain restriction here in WA if I ever need it. I did a practice installation in my driveway and they were super easy to install.

I drove in snow (1-2 inches on road) in the old AWD Mach-e and with my current Lightning without the tire socks and never felt any loss of traction on stock tires.

I didn't know they existed either. It seems that they can be used in California too depending on the conditions.

I didn't even know that these existed.
I didn't either until I was looking for cable chains for a trip over the mountains and ran across these. They are approved in the UK and some states in this country. They have high approval ratings on Amazon. And B1775 above has used them.

I haven't used in snow, only a familiarization installation in my driveway. I haven't been caught in any chain restriction yet and needed to use them.

The snow I have driven in was without the socks or chains on the stock tires of my MME and Lightning. Both vehicles are so heavy, AWD, and have such good traction control that snow was zero factor while driving with due diligence.

If you do a google search you’ll find some decent report videos on snow-socks … different brands head to head and comparison to chains and snow tires. As I recall, one brand of snow sock was somewhat decent, while others were garbage for the most part.

They are better than nothing. Modest improvement in snow traction, but they are a pain to put on and use, and you can only drive 25 MPH with them on. Basically I would consider them emergency equipment that you would only use if you were stuck or unexpectedly hit heavy snow conditions. I would be very distraught if I had to stop on the side of the road put these on, you could easily get hit by a car or someone could slide into you.

I would personally only buy the AutoSock or K&K brand ones, the cheaper brands could be junk.

Dedicated snow tires will be way better if you drive in snow regularly. Snow tires have the tread depth and sipes to actually dig through and grip the snow. Plus there is no safety risk when putting them on.

FYI: Max Performance Summer Tires are going to slip and slide in the snow, zero traction, you should never take the chance.

This video doesn’t present a perfect test, but it’s good enough to give you an idea of the relative performance. It’s too bad he didn’t also test snow tires.

I had a pair of auto socks for my last car, a Lexus ES-350. They worked fine in the snow. I found they were also very easy to mount, compact and easy to store in car, and much, much quieter than chains. As a prior post noted, they are approved in Washington in the same conditions that require chains. I believe they will work equally well on my RWD MME, but it hasn't snowed since I've had it so cannot say for sure.

Thank you for the correction. I will let you all know when I drive through the pass, but hopefully I won't need them.

I went to YouTube and found this test. The author was surprised at how well the socks worked. The replies were helpful too.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpMmu0AliG0
