Here is where the Subaru beats the Mach e:

  • Heated rear seats
  • Heat pump
  • More ground clearance
I saw it mentioned it was designed for a roof load (roof tent or gear), which is what many Subaru owners use, 700 pounds.

So I live in Subaru Land (Portland OR) and saw this at the Auto show. Listening to people it seemed well received by Subaru loyalists... not well by anybody else.

By comparison, the Kia EV6, VW ID4, MME drew a lot more attention.

For me, I just don't find it attractive (looking at you plastic fenders)

The stated 10-80% charging time is pretty bad, however I would still like to see the charging curve. If it can sustain higher charge from say 10-50%, and then falls off a cliff after that. It might still be viable option for some people getting their first EV.
The BZ4X AWD and most likely the Solterra too, are the worst charging EVs.

In DCFC testing the BZ4X, Kyle Connor said it was 64 minutes from 0% to 80%. It maxed out at 86kW from 0-5%. BZ4X was pulling 25kW at 73%. It was down to single digit kW at 80% and was 1kW at 95%. He gave up trying to get to 100% after charging for over 5.5 hours, including 45 mins at 99% and 1kW.

As a practical EV for going out of town for skiing, hiking, camping, etc it's a complete failure.

Nope.

The mustang mach-e is a performance SUV. It needs less ground clearance not more. Buyers that want more ground clearance should buy something else IMO.

Wow. And we thought the MME’s original charging cliff was bad.

Not a direct competitor because this is not a performance EV and more for the "My First EV" demographic to haul groceries and commute with. This is what the ID.4 should have been IMO.

Related review (Toyota has JBL, steer by wire, FWD only trims, etc.)

The Toyota BZ? blah blah and the Solterra kinda look alike.

Toyota may lower prices slightly as the tax credit is phased out over the next year. They are expected to hit 200K this quarter officially.

The bz4x and Solterra aren't exact matches... the Toyota has FWD but the Solterra is 100% AWD and their features are slightly different in some areas.
I would be shocked if they do that, unless the economy craters (which is very possible).

"DC charging may not work on AWD bz4x when the temperature is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit."

My suspicion is the AWD trim uses CATL LFP batteries.

Positive: Less flammable because of higher flashpoint (no LG Chem recalls like the ID.4, Kona, Bolt), more charge/discharge cycles before degradation, cheap.

Negatives: Less energy dense (and also heavier for the same kWh) -> slower charging, lower discharge power (less performance), issues in sub-freezing climates (can't fast charge, discharge can damage battery when cold)
