On occasion, my 2023 MachE suddenly applies brakes when backing out of garage. Any thoughts on why this happens?

Do you let your foot off the go pedal?

Any cross traffic alerts?

Reverse Brake Assist. It sees something, so it hits the brakes because it assumes you won't. Turn it off, or simply step on the gas.

Explained in the manual.

Mine does this when backing into garage, it thinks you’re approaching something you’re not and brakes to avoid something that’s not there??‍♂

It’s STS - makes for exciting life.

Shopping trolley syndrome - car goes where it wants, does what it wants, when it wants, how it wants.

There was a time you had to pay extra for that feature?

Could even be slope of driveway, etc
I’ve noticed that it’s not all about the slope. I get brakes almost every time at my daughter’s driveway even though it not as steep as mine where I never get it. I suspect there must be something about her street that the sensors pick up.

My car didn't want me brushing up against my hosta plants next to the garage. I did some moderately aggressive pruning and fixed it. ?

Reverse braking assist.

It’s a feature. You might be a little close to the side of the garage.

Mine does it sometimes backing up near a small palm tree, doesn’t want me to hit the palm fronds.

It’ll also do it if you’re about to hit something for real.

I have a slight slope on my driveway, and the sudden breaking only occurs about one out of five times that I back out of the garage. Could be my neighbor parking too close to the edge of my driveway.

Reverse Breaking Assist can be a nuisance, but it's a nuisance that has saved my butt a few times. Rather than turning it off, I'd suggest trying to make some adjustments in or around your garage. It is getting tricked by something.

A parked car shouldn’t trigger it unless it’s behind you. I backed out this morning with my wife’s care parked perpendicular to my path less than a foot away without triggering the brakes.

That happens to me occasionally. I have a one-car garage, so I park as close on the left side as I can. When I back out the sensors pick up the opening of the garage as I pass it either too quickly, or with my foot on the pedal, not applying pressure it is thinking "Crash!". I hate it but it is what it is.

When I back out, I’m so close enough to the door frame that I have to cut the wheel so the mirror doesn’t hit. Never activates the brakes.

Do you have pressure on the brake pedal?
