Summer Tires

Picking up my GTPE tomorrow. I am not sure what to do with the summer tires. I do not want to swap them twice a year. Is it possible to swap them with all season tires before I pick it up? Will I regret that. Someone told me that they know 2 people that have the GTPE that leave the summer tires on in the winter. They and I live in Ohio. Is that a really bad idea?

From what I’ve seen online it’s a very bad idea to leave them on all year. They are terrible in the snow/ice, and temps under 50 wear them down and could causes cracks In the tires.

using summer tires over the winter is a really bad idea. It's unsafe for all kinds of reasons not to mention they drive awful in cold weather and snow.

Below 45 they should not be used, as stated. They need to be stored 20 degrees or higher. This per Pirelli.

Dealer May give you a deal on a tire swap or you can try selling them yourself.

All seasons are a factory option on the GTPE now.

I’ve used nothing but summer tires for the last 50 years and live in northwest and I’ve never had a single problem using summer tires in the winter

That’s like saying you’ve never worn a seatbelt the last 50 years and you’ve got no reason to start.

I live in the PNW. Winter is below 40F consistently. Summer is above consistently. The below applies to most every car I’ve owned.

winter tires - three mountain rated studless gets me everywhere. I keep chains / socks for backup. Haven’t used them in a decade. I go up to Mt Hood dozens of weekends in the winter. Rarely do I shy away from the drive. Ice storms with frozen streets haven’t stopped me. Winter studless are awesome.

summer - all terrain tires. Mud, rain, dirt, pavement. Does fine on all. Mud not as much, but I’m not gonna get mud tires too. The Mach E sticks pretty well in corners for the size. Summer tires aren’t an option for my situation. I would just eat them up.

Don’t run summer tires above 45F ambient overnight temperatures for long. It’ll ruin them and their warranty. Don’t run winter tires above 45F ambient overnight temps for long either. Same results.

Totally depends on your climate and geography. Phoenix? Summer tires all year. Ohio? Swap 2x a year. Most tire stores will swap tires for free if you buy them there (Discount Tire).

I'll be picking up my GTPE this week. I will get through Spring, Summer and Fall but will definitely get Snows for next winter even though we don't get the snow like we used to living Southeast of Lake Ontario. It does get cold! ? Best be safe than sorry.

Also a factor you need to consider: how many days with ice and snow do I have? And - that has been mentioned above - how cold does it get.

Although it is some action, yes, but I believe in winter as well as in sommer pneus. That gives me full contact to the road surface / pavement and best grip during each season.

Some might see it differently but that's up to each one

My MME is a Premium AWD with factory all season tires. It hndles unbelievably well in snow and ice conditions. I was given an MME GT Performance with summer factory tires to take home to my garage to make sure the charger that an electrician installed was working. Total distance was 4 miles return. There was a good amount of snow and ice on the streets. I have never experienced anything so scary and useless as driving that GT with those tires. If you get any snow or icy conditions do not, I mean DO NOT drive with those factory summer tires.

if you’re in Deutschland then I do not believe we are talking about the same thing.

European all season tires have 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol on them.

North American all season tires are cold-weather biased summer tires that are good at all temps but aren’t intended for anything other than some light snow on occasion.

European all season tires are called all weather tires in North America.

Thanks for all the feedback and advice. I will stick with the summer tires for now since it is warming up. In the fall I will decide on all seasons or maybe go with winters.

I find it best to get a second set of wheels, and a set of 'real' snow tires mounted and balanced and just swap the entire set of wheels/tires on and off as conditions and temps warrant

If you don't drive like an a$$hole, you don't need winter tires for cold weather. Snow is probably a different story, but AWD def helps. I was on the fence about my GTPE that I bought in December. I've read all the tire threads on this forum and seen all the fear mongering, but haven't had a single problem with my Pirellis on our teens and 20s degree mornings. My car is garage kept, so the tires stay warm at night, but sits outside at work so the tires are cold for my evening commute. I also went through a full cold winter with Conti ECS summers on my BMW, no issues through the life of the tires. Back in college, we drove our Mustangs all the time in winter and snow and whatever, no problems except for lack of traction. Just drive smart.

That being said, if I lived in a place that had very cold winters or a decent amount of snow, I'd buy winter wheels/tires. I will def replace my current summer tires with all-seasons on the Mach-E just like I did my 335i. There was just no reason to do it right off the bat (for me).
