German, Japanese, etc. automobile manufacturers have been able to circumvent the dealership hinderances for decades. Sure you pay more for them initially and for rare repairs, but you "get what you pay for".
Cadillac, the choice of pimps and drug dealers, has tried to mimic the foreign car dealership model, but the Cadillac is still a piece of junk which costs far too much to maintain (failure by design, the American way).
Ford and the other American manufacturers have not and do not incorporate customer satisfaction into their business plan. Their goal is and always has been to design cars that look good for the moment. Easy to do still w/ the likes of Tesla.

hmm I'll see your broad generalizations and respond with facts. My ATS has 76K miles... zero failures... my 5 series BMW by this time needed:

water pump
2 sets of rotors
heater ballast
radio
and multiple oil leaks fixed.
