Took a trip from Tucson to Ventura California this past week. Recharged in Quartsite at a massive Tesla station. Easy with the adapter and no issues. Continued to Indio and tried the Tesla chargers off Jackson St. It didn’t work and then noticed the app says it’s not compatible. Tried 3 different chargers to no avail. Found an Electrify America nearby at Walmart and proceeded to Ventura. Recharged at a Tesla in Ventura. Prices seemed similar so I didn’t really shop around. Also Tesla in Ventura had a lower rate between 10pm and 8am. Behind a Denny’s so had coffeee while I waited. My question is why would a Tesla charger not be compatible? What interface/handshaking does a charger use to determine this?

Did you not read the blue card that came with your Ford adapter? All Tesla SuperChargers are not compatible. Old locations will never be compatible, and newer V3 and V4 locations that are congested may not be. That's why you check the app. When it says "not compatible", you can waste your time (as you did) trying charger after charger and none of them are going to work.

Question - what made you try 3 different chargers after you read the words "not compatible"?

Some are not compatible because they are older 150kW stations and lack CCS communication hardware.

Other sites are not compatible simply because Tesla doesn’t want them to be and they want to gate keep some locations for Tesla only.

Only about 60% of them are open to non-Teslas nationwide so you can’t just randomly pull up to one you’ve never been to before and expect it to work. ALWAYS have to check with the apps first to see if it’s compatible.

ALL as in ..... every Tesla charge station. Only the V3 and V4 are compatible but you still need to check the Tesla app to make sure as some of those may not be compatible.

Confused now?

Right. All are not compatible, i.e. some are, some aren't.
Grammatically, the better way to say that is "not all are compatible". The way you wrote it implies that all of them are not compatible, i.e none are compatible.
