SORRY SORRRY SOOOORY!

Im sure this has been asked many times before. I have read through some of the posts and believe I have the basics of what is needed, just need someone to info check me.

I have an unplanned trip to Phoenix AZ from San Diego this Wednesday. i drive about 20,000 miles a year, car is almost 75,000 miles, but I’ve actually never had to rely on charging to get to my destination. To further cause me great concern, my console display, the main display in the car, does not work. Not sure why, it needs to go to the dealer but that is not an option for this trip. So yes a three year EV owner is wigging out a bit! :)

I have ABRP loaded on my tablet and purchased an OBD scanner that I found on the forums. I have a suction mount that I’m going to use to attach the iPad to my non working display lol. I’m hoping this will help with range fluctuations as google maps no longer will communicate with the car. Pretty sure I’ve gotten that working along with a car scanner app, was shocked my battery has lost 12%.

Im wanting to use the Tesla network and found a few people one the forums that recommend an adapter but I can’t find it on Amazon. https://a.co/d/6xy4FyF would something like that work? I’ve seen reviews mentioning using it on the Mach E and I believe I saw it on the forums and now I can’t find it. I did read you have to make sure the Tesla site supports the adapter and “other” EVs, also apparently there are issues with taking up two spaces while charging.

Are there anymore “gotchas” that I need to be aware of? I know repeated questions can get annoying, so if someone has a link to a good forum post I’d super appreciative of that as well. If it was just me I’d wing this, but this trip includes my wife, two kids, and two dogs…..

Have the Ford Pass app on your phone running, it has the battery percent on it.

I am going the opposite direction tomorrow and will stop in El Centro to charge. I will use Tesla there but have also used the EA there as well. The EA is at a bank with no rest rooms or food nearby.

Tesla is also in Tacna and Dateland

I had to do a few trips to Palm Springs earlier this year. Required having to charge after my destination to get back home. Always used EA and 75% of the time it was a crap experience. I even picked to travel late at night, took almost 2hrs to charge one time. Only 2 of the 5 chargers worked and I was at 25%. I’m hoping Tesla will be a better experience. Thankfully I don’t have the need to fast charged frequently.

Main console isn’t working, as in, you don’t even have a speedometer?

Think I’d just rent a car.

No the large portrait display, so I have no navigation or ability to see my mi/kw usage or adjusted charging. That is why I’m using ABRP, although I honestly don’t care for its navigation. Planning on using its route on my cellphone and have ABRP running with the OBD scanner for any required charging adjustments. Never used the app for a long trip before.

Then yeah ABRP works, honestly even their default estimate will be pretty close without OBD if you fill your speed/weight correctly.

I have stopped at that EA in El Centro numerous times to recharge. Walk about 3 blocks to the main street (South Imperial Avenue) and there are numerous places to eat.

I also live in SD and have made the trip to Phoenix multiple times. Start at 100% charge at home, recharge at the EA in El Centro and the EA in Dateland. Works great...easy peasy. There are restaurants within a few blocks of the EA in El Centro and pizza and good ice cream at the EA in Dateland. Charge to 80% in Phoenix before you head back. Stop at the EA in Dateland and the EA in El Centro heading back to SD. Charge all the way to 80% in El Centro before heading up the mountains back to SD. That will keep you from having massive range anxiety as the range drops precipitously as you gain elevation. Once you reach the "peak" on I-8 and start heading back downhill, you gain massive amounts of charge. Resist the range anxiety. You will be fine! :) Go Padres!!!

I'd do a trial run at the closest compatible tesla charging station and make sure everything works after you get the adapter. Don't forget to go under "connected services" in fordpass and set up you blue oval network plug and charge account (add credit card etc). It's a whole lot better finding out issues close to home.

If your phone is linked to your car, you should be able to use Apple CarPlay or Android and get mapping and real time battery information from the car.

No officer, I totally don't have Netflix running on this.. lol

Will only use this for our trip, hopefully can get the display fixed when I get back home... It's rock solid on there though, should work. Only thing is that the audio for directions seems to be super low for some reason, even on full volume. I'll be using my cellphone on Apple Maps with the exported route for navigation anyways which is loud enough.

Also received the adapter, holy smokes you could kill someone with this thing, built like a tank. I am a little annoyed though that there wasn't any type of case for it and does not seem to be one you can buy. There is no way something his heavy, and I'd assume sensitive, is just going to get tossed someplace.

OP meant his infotainment screen but even then I agree with you. I know you can voice command HVAC but no heated seats or steering wheel, no way to listen to music reliably, no way to get to many of the car’s settings at all. Can you imagine having to use the defrost button to clear up your windshield and then you gotta voice command the HVAC back down to something reasonable that doesn’t have the car blasting the fan at full speed. ?

You gotta be cheap, lazy or both to drive some broken ass shit that far instead of just renting a car.
