I do agree it's a pathetic excuse for one, but bear in mind the E-GMP platform is a ground-up EV platform, unlike BMW, et al.'s implementation of their EV platforms. I think the E-GMP cars have relatively short hoods and large storage on the inside, which compares much more favorably against the Mach-E as opposed to the rest of the "let's make a chassis that can accommodate a battery and a large ICE" market.

(Bjorn's banana box test shows the Ioniq 5 being able to store about the same number of banana boxes as the Mach-E, even without a usable frunk).
I actually had an ionic 5 for several days. I was not impressed. I posted my observations elsewhere.
Regarding the ABBA member and their bananas:
1. I don’t want to sacrifice room in the passenger compartment to haul around purchases.
2. there are times when I want to place stuff in a locked, out of sight compartment (when I’m in West Philly, for example ?)
3. I may have dirty or smelly stuff I don’t want in the passenger compartment.
4. most importantly the frunk is an excellent koi pond ?

This is a little misleading as to generations of the ICE Mustang. The first generation is listed as 1965-1973, yeah right! I give you a 1965 and a 1973, don't know about you but no way they should be classed as the same generation!

Tell that to Ford.

They’re the ones defining generations.

That said, what happened in the 1960s isn’t as relevant to the point of what has happened more recently.

Manufacturers just don’t do major changes that frequently.

Back in the 1960s- literally EVERY year of Mustang was significantly different inside and out.

They don’t do things like that anymore. Because $$.

Mike you don't need to worry about that. Even in the unlikely case that the law gets past, it would apply only to new cars. "The measure, Senate Bill 961, would require every passenger vehicle, truck and bus manufactured or sold in California to have speed governors starting in 2027." [Emphasis added]. (To be clear, I don't support this bill even though the sponsor is my state senator. I plan to write him a letter expressing my concerns.)
Right, if it passes and you want a new car, you'd better buy a MY 2026 before the 2027 rule kicks in. Though I'm sure that about 6 hours after they hit the streets there will be hacks to remove it.

Personally, I would not own any of those brands. The Mach E seems more premium to me. Better than Tesla, not quite as premium as BMW/Porche. To me, the next step up would be the iX, which I will seriously consider once my options lease ends. It is not much of a looker, but seems to check a lot of boxed for me.
The highest-end trim in the ionic 6 is fairly nice. I found the ionic 5 interior to be very cheap-looking and cheap-feeling. More like they took one of their recycled beer cans from the 1990s and updated the styling.

The car is barely 3 years old.

Up next will be some minor styling updates, a few new colors and some extra features.

Major refreshes on a completely brand new platform and model don’t tend to come this soon.

The ICE Mustang generations tend to last around a decade or more.

6th Gen Mustang lasted 9 years. 5th gen 10 years and 4th was 11 years.

https://www.autolist.com/ford-mustang/ford-mustang-generations

And the 7th generation Mustang? Seems like just a mild refresh of the 6th.
Fair to point out the car is only 3 years old, but I also think it's a bit of a false equivalency to compare refresh times to an ICE muscle car to the Mach-E, where technology is changing at a pretty rapid pace.

5 to 6 years makes sense. Earlier than that would probably kneecap already slumping sales of this gen.

What are the major changes?

The 2024 S, X, 3 and Y all seem pretty much the same as they all did the first year they came out. Different battery and power options on some, but not much else it seems.
You forgot the groundbreaking yoke in the 2024 Model S! ??

Good points but interestingly Ford is already changing the 14th Gen. F-150. After doing a complete redo in 2021 the 2024 is yet changed again, a slight refresh but a refresh non the less.

2025 will be about as much of a refresh as the Mach-E will get before the Gen 2 BEV's come out.
Expect things like:
- NACS Charge Port to replace J1772/CCS
- Possibly Android Automotive based Sync (5.x) to replace the current Blackberry/QNX based Sync (4.x)
- New Colors
- New Wheels
- New front bumper/grill/'stash
- Different interior materials
- Possibly different steering wheel hub/airbag cover

The last three are the least likely, but possible.
Don’t count on new sync. Remember, Ford decontents cars in successive years until the new generation comes out.

Wow, do you realize how much revenue California will lose as a result of dropping speed enforcement numbers! I mean seriously if a vehicle can not exceed the speed limit by more than 10mph there will be a lot less speeding tickets.

Like I said, I doubt this will pass. And if it doesn’t, I don’t think it will be due to a concern about a reduction in lost speeding ticket fines.

By 2026 Chinese manufacturers will have plants in Mexico and the market will be flooded with cheap as chips EVs. By 2030 all quality issues will be resolved and they'll own the market.

All of the stuff brought up in this thread and not one mention of adding a heat pump? Obviously different people have different wants/needs, but I'd take a heat pump for better heating/cooling efficiency before faster charging (but that's also because I almost never use L3 charging at this point).

I wouldn't expect a major refresh for at least another 2-3 years though.

Is tech changing that rapidly?

What significantly different tech does the 2024 Model S have that the 2013 doesn’t?

Interesting that did a refresh on the F150 this fast. Definitely not normal.

I don’t understand the hate.

Just because some cars “say” they can charge faster, doesn’t mean they actually will. 100 kW charging is great, because I don’t mind stopping for 30 minutes every 2 hours to stretch and get coffee. Not sure why I would want to buy a shoddily built Korean car that takes months to get parts if something breaks just to be about to say I could theoretically charge in half the time.

The only true competition is Tesla who are definitely cutting edge on EV tech but not much else.
