The Return of Drive Mode Unavailable

So I used to get the drive mode unavailable message often. It’d start off in Engage (instead of Unbridled) and not let me change with the interface.

A Sync reset or power cycling car would usually resolve issue for a few hours to several days. This went on for a few months, seemed to resolve about a year ago. Presumably after some update


Since last week I’ve noticed the issue four times so far.

When I showed the dealer a video of it a year ago they couldn’t reproduce at the time and told me to bring back if was an issue. Honestly not a big issue, but the different and UNEXPECTED behavior when I take my foot off the accelerator (I use two pedal driving) is a surprise at times. For someone not aware it could cause an accident I suspect.

Has anyone else seen this issue return? Lots of threads but most older.

it has returned for me too. My car is in for paint warranty work but once I get it back I’ll let you know the update I have.

I just had a "drive mode unavailable" popup while driving... went to the vehicle settings, and could NOT select a mode.

Next time I got in the car, drive mode was unbridled just like I usually use.... and the issue has not recurred. I checked via ODB2 carscanner when I got home, and no DTC were logged, so my questions are:

how/why would this error happen, and NOT log a DTC ?

Is there a known cause, and fix ?

I turned off auto-updates many months ago, there have been NO updates that could have changed anything. I am running the same versions of sync, fordpass, and everything else.

For me, it never actually went away. Ford just stopped displaying the error. I still frequently get the issue where the drive mode drops to Engage, but it no longer has the error. It just changes, and then takes quite a while before it lets you switch from Engage again.

I don't think the error ever left. I think they just hid it.
