Mine does this pretty frequently also. I think this is what is happening when it occurs to me:

  • Walk up to locked car
  • Open tailgate without unlocking doors (doors unlock automatically for tailgate)
  • Press tailgate close button and walk towards drivers door to get in (or at least away from tailgate)
  • Tailgate/Car/Locks/Body Control Module thinks something should be locked but it isnt, --> error
I don't seem to get this error when I unlock the doors on the car first, then go to the tailgate. So I think this has a lot to do with PAAK and the locks not being certain of what state they should be in, and some mismatch somewhere in the software.

I'm planning to ask my dealer to check FDRS for updates for this issue when I am in for 20k mile service in a month or so. I'm not sure but I think this would fall under body control module updates, which I believe I have one of available.
Same exact sequence for me as well. Keep us posted if the updates fix it. …assuming you can replicate the problem afterwards!

HuntingPudel:

I've communicated with the "Ford Motor Company Official account". It's one of Ford's social media folks; she connected me with a person from Ford's "Customer Relationship Center – BEV team". That person contacted me, set up a Ford case number, and offered to schedule an appointment at my local dealership. I didn't need that as I already have an appointment with them in 2 weeks. I'll bring this to their attention, but I doubt that they will be able to do anything as it isn't totally repeatable.

As can be seen in this thread and several others, this issue is not unique to my car; many other Mach-E owners have experienced this issue. I thought the "Ford Motor Company Official account" was reaching out as this was something that Ford was looking at in a broader sense, not just with my car. So not sure how useful I will be to solve this overall issue if Ford isn't looking into this on their own.

I'll keep you all informed if I find anything out.

I figure (at least for my issue) it’s a sensor that’s confused. It only happens once in a while so I don’t care all that much about my issue. I can close it manually and it will latch and lock. ??

How do you close it manually. If I try to just shut it with my hand, it resists.

This is common with people who also have the mysterious trunk opening issue as well.

I first documented the opening on it's own back in this thread:
https://www.macheforum.com/site/threads/logs-trunk-open.13079/

Since then Ford has confirmed that they recognize the issue, and they think it's due to water getting into some of the sensors within the tailgate. They were going to replace my entire tailgate to send my old one back for diagnostic examination, but there's been some hiccups with that.

The same sensors also prevent the trunk from closing, it's as if someone is pushing the button to open it while it closes.

It's just one of those things that I have had to live with for over a year. When it happens you can still close the trunk, just grab it and shove it closed. There is slight resistance and the sound of hydraulic lifts compressing, but it doesn't harm anything.

More than anything it's an embarrassment, you causally close your trunk just to make grandma walking in front of your car suffer a heart attack from the double honk.

As Todd said, there is resistance but it will close. I don’t think there is all that much resistance to mine, so it’s not a big deal for me. ??

Yeah. I had almost exactly that embarrassment in a parking lot. The poor old lady really did look like she was having a heart attack. Had a 20-something man get really angry with me once too. Now if anyone looks like they will be walking close to my car when I’m about to close the hatch, I just close manually. ??

Do you guys get that weird alert tone when the trunk opens? I wonder if it's related. I get that all the time, it's like an error alert sound, but I have no idea what it's telling me. Trunk opens and closes fine on its own.

No alert noises when I open it. ?‍♂?

Can't you just shutoff off the "Mislock Chirp" setting to eliminate the double honk? Whoever at Ford thought a double honk was a good idea didn't think through the real world implications of that freaking honk going off unexpectedly. A chirp would be one thing - that honk risks the health of old people near these cars and risks my marital status with my wife who was still sleeping in the room right above the garage... Thanks, Ford honk designer.

Yes, it can be disabled with FORscan. The problem is that I like it for the “hey stupid, you left your key in the car” warning and hate it for everything else. While I almost never have left a key in anywhere (house, car, locker, you name it) and have never been locked out of anything (due to my father’s profession), I prefer to have it for the one situation “just in case.” ?‍♂?

The "Mislock chirp" I am talking about can be disabled from the settings menu in the car. See attached picture.

I scheduled my 10,000 mile service and went into great detail about this issue and asked they look into it, and gave them my Ford case number (Ford also called the local dealer to make sure they looked at it). However, there is nothing on my invoice slip to indicate they ever bothered looking at this issue. And I don't blame them, as this is an intermittent problem they likely wouldn't be able to even replicate, never mind troubleshoot and repair. Sorry I don't have anything more definitive.

Phone/key is left in the trunk? It is supposed to do that if it detects key in trunk when closing (by under fluor antenna) since trunk is separately locked to prevent being locked out of vehicle
This was the issue for me. I guess today was the first time in four years that I locked my phone in the trunk. I didn't realize why the hatch was refusing to close, so I closed it from the big touchscreen and just drove off anyway. Didn't notice my phone was back there till I got home.

I can find no mention of this in the Owner's Manual, but it seems like a good feature. A clearer indication of WHY the hatch wouldn't close would have been helpful for me today, but I suppose if I ever do it again, I will know what's going on.
