So just to make sure, you're not leaving the car in drive when you are trying to open it? Does it beep when you press the button? And you also don't have another fob or PAAK inside the car confusing it?

If the car is in park, you only have one fob or PAAK nearby or in the car, and it's within 3 feet of the trunk, then it should work. If not, then I might suspect the button is going bad due to wearing out or water ingress.
I had this same problem this winter (2021 MME) and I blamed it on weather.
Now it's happening in the summer.
It must be a software problem because if I open the drivers side door and push the unlock button, then go to the rear, the black button works.
If I use the FOB it works.
So that eliminates the black button being bad.
I wish Ford would investigate this problem because it is inconsistent.

This just happened to me. The sequence I used to fix it. Open trunk with (button twice) , close , lock with fob. Wait a second or two. Use physical button to open.

What if the trunk doesn't open with the button? That's the problem.

Do the yellow lights still flash? Honestly this is probably some quirk with the paak , fob , sensor just getting out of sync. Try a bunch of stuff . If the yellow lights are not flashing when you press the physical button then this is something else.
