This happened to me yesterday. Car was parked in the garage and on charge. I unplugged it at 90% then closed the garage door again. A couple of hours later my wife went to leave but when she opened the garage door it only opened a little bit then stopped. Investigating she found that the rear hatch was open and blocking the garage door. She closed the hatch and was able to open the garage door OK. This is the first time this has happened in almost 3 years of ownership. fortunately there doesn't appear to be any damage to the hatch which was still closed this morning when I went to run an errand.

I guess what I’m saying is, the kick sensor is probably the culprit - not PAAK
I’ve had the phantom opening exactly once in 4 years and that was a couple of months ago. The Mach-e sits in a stall in the garage with an east facing garage door. I opened the door from inside the garage and the lift gate came up. The sun had just crested Mauna Kea and was at just right angle when the garage door was barely open to shine into the kick to open sensor area. That did it. I had stuff to put in the back anyway. It was remarkably convenient.

You're saying the car thought the sunlight was your foot?

If that really works, I'm gonna open the trunk that way all the time! I'm pretty sure I have the Staff of Ra somewhere in my basement...

It happened just as the door opened. The amount of light entering the garage was just at the right angle and in the right spot.

I don't think any of the sensors (ultrasound, capacitive) used for this sort of thing are capable of detecting light.

They don’t as far as I know. But it’s possible the shadow movement was enough to trigger it. Hasn’t happened before or since, ?. Anyway, that’s my best guess.

That was actually an unusual time for me to be leaving, Mauna Kea is just a bit short of 14000 ft and the sun can crest it well after sunrise. It was after 7 am which puts me in Parker Schools and HPA traffic in town (Two extremely high end private schools). I try to avoid that traffic at all costs. Too many mammoth SUVs and Teslas. ;)

I still remember dropping my kid off on his first day at the fancy private middle school. About half of the entire line of parents' cars were Tesla Model X, with the bird-wing doors. It was ridiculous, because this was when the Model X was newly released and almost nobody had one. I had no idea what I was getting the boy into!

Hawaii Preparatory Academy:

https://www.hpa.edu/

Current tuition: $32,500 per year day students; $64,800 per year boarding students.

Parker Schools is the low rent one. ;) The current tuition at Parker Schools is $20,000 per year in grades K - 5 and $22,300 per year grades 6 through 12. They’re so low rent their headmaster lives near us. :p

They have the cars to match too. Oddly, or maybe not, the most popular EV in the line ups there is the Model X.

People move to Hawaii to send their kids there. Then they complain about living here, trash it, and move elsewhere when the kids are done with primary education. Same as everywhere else in other words. Marc Benioff allegedly did, has, or is going to be enrolling his kids at HPA. He’s bought huge swath of Waimea, made donations to the school, etc. He also bought the first Lightning on the island, so he’s not all bad. ;)
