There are many older threads on this. See here and here for example.

It’s still happening in 2025. In my case, it has happened about a half-dozen times over 4 years of ownership. Most recently this morning.

In my case, each instance has occurred in conjunction with the car detecting PAAK and waking up on my approach.

I cannot link the bug to anything else - it happens very infrequently. But I now have two scratches on my rear hatch from it hitting a concrete ceiling joist in my work parking garage. Sometimes I can get there in time to stop the hatch - sometimes not.

@Ford Motor Company - are you aware of this issue? Are you working on a fix?

Have you reported this via Feedback in the vehicle?

Funny, yesterday when walking toward the car with my hands full, the trunk opened spontaneously as soon as I got close enough for PAAK to connect. Found that quite useful!

Yeah. I think it’s the PAAK engagement that’s doing this. Maybe fob, too? Would need input from others. Some have reported it just kinda randomly happened in their garage at home, but I suspect it was an instance of PAAK/fob engagement.

And yeah I suppose it could be helpful sometimes. Just hope it doesn’t happen in a garage lol.

I have been experiencing the same issue for well over a year. Sometimes, it happens in the most inopportune moment -- like during a rainstorm as you are trying to get into your car to shield from the rain. Because I cannot replicate the problem at the dealership, they have not been able to help. I note that it happens invariably when I am approaching the car from the frunk on the driver's side with my iPhone (PAAK) in my pocket. I do not carry a keyfob with me.

Ford Warranty comp'ed a repaint of my tailgate from the 8" scratch it got opening in the middle of the night and scraping against the garage door hinge. It's been turned it off ever since.

It’s so rare, only happens to me about once or twice per year.

Mine happened last week for the first time in a long while. No lights on in the garage, but I did notice I had cast a shadow as I walked several feet behind the car when it happened. Couldn’t replicate it, so no idea if that caused it. Phone was in my back pocket. No pets or rodents in the garage. Maybe infrared heat reflection on the concrete. Or aliens.

I've theorized about the aliens as well. The technicians at my dealership theorize that it is the ghost of an unhappy '67 Mustang that is seeking revenge on anyone buying an electrified model.

I already experienced it three times this year.. I'm going to turn the kick sensor off for a while.
This has gotta be the explanation. The kick sensor won’t activate without PAAK/fob presence. So the car wakes up and then the kick sensor is phantom triggering based on something. Kind of like how the rain sensing wipers sometimes trigger for no reason at all (that’s much more common).

I guess what I’m saying is, the kick sensor is probably the culprit - not PAAK.

Unless anyone is experiencing this without a kick sensor?

Mine was disabled upon delivery. I did the hack to activate the foot operated release. I had it open one time but never since. In my garage it won’t hit anything if it does open on its own.

I still have it happening (on a rare and usually at a bad time like during a rain storm) with my 2021 premium, more so in the last six months than ever before. The paint on the rear hatch was not repaired by the dealership because I could not replicate the problem. They insisted that the hatch opening in a parking garage where the ceiling is low puts me as the owner at fault and not Ford. Given that I could not replicate the problem, they could not attribute it to a car fault.

I have the kick sensor turned on all the time and use it frequently.

Never once had the trunk open unbidden, in 3.5 years.
