My wife and I share our 2024 Mach E. We both have iPhones. We have our phones set up as keys. The behavior I would like to see is that when my wife gets in the car and starts it her phone is connected to Car Play then when I get in to use the car and start it it knows that it is me with my iPhone and it connects to Car Play. Why doesn't it do this automatically. Some times we get the select phone screen and even if we chose the correct device it will not connect to car play. We have to pull off the road, turn off the car and then reconnect to the Ford Ap to get it to work. This is not OK.

Is there something I should be doing to set up the car to recognize who is driving it by which phone unlocks it or starts it?

All the best,
David

Sometimes Carplay works great. Sometimes it does not.

It is not a unique problem to Ford or the MME.

In the past there were some versions of the MME infotainment software that were much worse than now.

The latest software mostly works for me. Occasionally I will get no audio from CarPlay and that will most often be fixed by disconnecting and reconnecting the phone from the Sync UI. Rarely I have to reboot Sync to get a connection with sound.

Very occasionally CarPlay will refuse to connect after a sync reboot and I will have to reboot my phone to get a connection.

I have rented cars from Nissan, Toyota, KIA, Hyundai, etc, and all have had odd CarPlay connection issues even in the short period of time I have had the rentals.

As for it selecting your phone vs your wife's, many software versions ago you could specify the preferred phone but never has it used the PAAK phone to determine CarPlay. I think with the latest software it tends to prefer the last connected phone.

I have found since my iPhone updated to iOS 18.4 the connection to Car play has degraded. My phone will randomly disconnect from Car play. or it will connect for the maps, but no audio (phone, Spotify, podcasts etc.). Im sure its a challenge to update carplay for every OEM, for every update
