VW ID.4 Unveiled Today

See attached a video from Borjn Nylan testing the range of the VW ID3 (62KW, 58 usable). He drive 257 miles with 100% battery charge. So considering the ID4 with 82KW, 78 usable, it would drive about 345 miles but it would be probably 310 miles because the weight is higher.
DO you think it is feasable?

I’ve never driven an EV before, so just curious... do you have to manually turn off your infotainment screen and a/c in vehicles that do not have a power button? Or will the car sense the driver is out of range and automatically shut those things off for you?

Starting from the first time the complaint was made, the following thought came to mind: "If the worst thing that happens to you all day is that you had to press a button to start your car, you had a pretty fantastic day"

It uses the same tech as gas cars with keyless entry - if you've ever had a "key not present" alarm, etc.

When it detects you placed it into park, opened the door, removed the key (your phone) from the vehicle, removed weight from the seat, closed the door, and then it starts counting down and after a few seconds turns itself off, locks the door, and chirps the horn to say goodbye.

If someone other than you was to sneak up and open the door in that split second before the horn chirp, they could enjoy the A/C and radio, but as soon as they put their foot on the brake, it'd check for your phone *inside* the car, and since it wouldn't be there, wouldn't enable a shift out of Park.

To speak for a Tesla, it does alert you when you press the brake that the car is waking up - all the warning lights flash their self test on the screen, and if the seat belt isn't buckled it dings at you.

It's not that Teslas don't have an ignition - they just use the brake pedal as the ignition. The car is in "accessory" until the brake pedal is pressed, and then it's in "run" but still can't be shifted without the brake pressed during the shift request.

Brake + Shift isn't something you'd just randomly do while not expecting the car to move, I would think.

Actually there are decades and decades of precedence when it comes to product safety standards. UL has existed for over 100 years, and millions and millions of products have power switches to be able to disconnect high voltage for electrical equipment safety.

This is also part of the National Electric Code in the US. The NEC requires safety "listed" devices for many of the categories of electrical devices installed into buildings. Public accessible locations such as grocery stores, churches, government buildings, hospitals, etc... The Fire Marshall can and will remove equipment that does not meet NEC requirements. Safety listed devices need to meet UL or similar standards, such as IEC standards commonly used worldwide. Audio, video, computer, IT, and telecomm electrical equipment, among others, must meet these safety standards to be UL listed.

Another commonly found NEC requirement is to have a visible disconnect for a central air conditioner compressor, either a circuit breaker or removable fuse must be in close proximity for a safety disconnect.

The safety standards require a means of disconnect for the high voltage, either unplugging the power cord, or a switch that will disconnect high voltage. Because there is a high voltage power source in a hybrid or EV vehicle, it's is logical to provide the same means of safety disconnect as other industry standards have employed.

Tesla has limited the functional safety of different systems in order to save parts and save costs. It saves money to not add the left side blind spot indicator, not offer rear cross traffic sensors, no power button, no side mirror signal indicators (the fender placement is too low), no pedestrian warning system (until it was required by law), no dedicated computer/display reset button (user has to remember to push both steering wheel buttons).

When I look at the interior and screen display on the ID.4. It reminds me too much of a cheap toy and looks like my kids V tech toys. ?? Big plastic, bulky trim on everything. Today's tech is to have edgeless screens.

You probably know that MB, BMW and many others have the same display!!!

Both the ID.3 and ID.4 have heads-up display with AR overlay and heat pumps available as options. Apparently neither will be coming to the US, at least for now. These would have been pretty nice sweeteners on the options list when compared to Mach-e. Why do the European makes leave so much good stuff at home?
