From what I've found, there are two major reasons for the lack of frunk in the ID.4. First, is to keep the hood short and maximize the interior room. Remember the ID.4 is a "world" car with most being sold in European markets, where smaller cars with short hoods are desirable -- you don't want to get to a "blind" intersection (where the houses are right up to the street corner) and have a long hood.

So VW intentionally kept the hood short, with the idea of maximizing the space in the car. It is worth noting that the ID.4 has similar (and I believe slightly larger) total interior space than the Mach E, despite being about 5-6 inches shorter.

The second reason is to give the RWD ID.4 its amazing turn radius.
The space is not in the front seats or rear sitting. It's in the cargo area about 4 more cubic. The rest is as close as you can get. But with the front storage, the mache has more total cubic ft.

The main reason VW did it is for the quicker turning correct, and more room for larger tires and to have room for the awd gtx.
