I drive in 2 pedal mode almost exclusively. I can absolutely tell when the braking changes from regen to friction, both by feel and by sound. I go down a couple of moderate hills on my commute that require me to apply the brakes to maintain speed. I add 2-3 miles of range there, which clearly would not happen if the car was using friction brakes every time I touch the brake pedal.
When the MME was released, Ford specifically said that there was no efficiency difference between *any* of the drive modes, with or without 1PD. The "brake pedal only uses friction brakes" is true if you're driving a Tesla, but I'm pretty sure every other EV uses hybrid braking all the time.
