This was mildly amusing.

So new Mach E (2023), I don't have a charger installed at home yet so I used the L1 charger (white one) to plug in at home.

When it came to taking it off I pressed the button on the car next to the charger and it stopped, but I couldn't take it out. Tried googling and everything said L1 and L2 charging had no locking mechanism.

Only until I turned the plug socket off in the house, then went out and pressed the button again I heard the latch unlock and it came out.

DOH, luckily I didn't break anything!

The button does nothing in L1 or L2 charging, only DC fast charging. Simply push the button on the charger handle and unplug. If that doesn't work, something is defective.

Because of the fuse panel and the location of my garage it’s over $3K to install level 2. I trickle most of the time since I WFH

I simply can’t install a L2. So I’ve been doing L1 for 3 years without issue. For the amount I drive it’s not an issue at all.

Just to be sure you read Rick’s post. You do not have to press any button to remove the EVSE plug for L1/L2 charging. The handle does have a release trigger. If you are charging and try to remove it pressing the trigger will also shut down charging.

very odd, thanks for the replies. It was definitely stuck in there the first time I tried. It came out a little (a cm?) then felt something holding it in. Until I pressed the button and it came out.

I tried again today and it just slid out. what could have held it in the first time?

This is good to hear. I bought my 2023 GTPE this past April and have been limited to level 1 charging because I didn't want to jump at the $5k cost to run new electrical to my detached garage (with me digging the trench) and upgrade the electrical panel. And I don't want a charger on the side of my house when I have a garage. We will see how I do with level 1 charging during the winter in Southeast Michigan. I do not have a long commute and often work from home.

Because I work from home, I can leave it plugged in much longer than if I had to go to the office every day. Often over 16 hours. Combined with the fact I don’t drive a lot anyway and I can charge every three days.

I can go longer if I let the battery get lower, I just try to keep it relatively high just in case. If it gets lower than I like I can just charge on subsequent days, spend some time somewhere with a L2, or if low enough to be worth it go to a local DC charger.

Sounds like you may be in a good position. Give it a try, see how it goes. If you have local L2/DC if needed it’s even easier. Doesn’t work well for you? Start budgeting.

But you may save $5k.
