Yup it was an "anti-theft" that I said "no F**** way" was I paying for as I didn't ask for it. This was back in the early days when there were up to 20k markups for cars on the lot. The dealer even offered me a $7500 check to not take the car and walk away. That all said, I still got stuck paying for the "protection package" crap, but I figured with the light gray interior, this way I didn't have to ever worry if it stained :)

I was thinking maybe it was for a smoke screen or oil slick or something?

Tried searching and came up empty. I just noticed this for the first time today (!!). Any ideas?

As other's have pointed out, it's a system that costs a dealer literally just a couple of dollars to install, and they try to get you to pay upwards of $1,000 to "activate" it. One of these was on a used car we bought one time.

WARNING: On the used car we bought, the button thing was tucked under the kick panel so we didn't even see it. After a month or so of owning the car, we noticed it had a BAD battery drain, like 2, maybe 3 days without running and the battery was dead. I used the "pull fuse, measure current" method to find which circuit was using the most amount of power. This led us to look under the dash were we found this POS system, BADLY wired in (using electrical tape). I removed it (and had to solder the starter exciter wire back together) and boom magically the phantom drain was gone.

If you are handy yourself you could likely remove it yourself. They might have just T-tapped the thing in place. If you don't feal comfortable, bring it to a local mechanic. I strongly recommend either way having it removed. Do some Google/Reddit searches and this system causes interminable amounts of problems that you will eventually have to deal with if you don't remove it.

Wow, this conversation is really interesting! I never would have thought to look for something like that. I think I'll go look right now!

I'm sure it's cheap, but $2.00? I highly doubt that. You can't even get anything on the dollar menu at McDonald's for $2.00.

Clearly I didn't mean actually, literally $2 ?. But, damn you now I have a hankering for an ice cream cone off their dollar menu!
