Just returned from a 320 mile round trip in the 80’s.

The 160 miles there left the car at 55%. I left it plugged into a 110 outlet for 20 hours and left at 77% for the return. We arrived home at 32%.

That means we could have made the 320 mile round trip without charging and arrived home at around 10%.

Yet half that 320 mile trip on Christmas Eve was a struggle leaving in the low 90%. That trip the car had sat outside in single digit temps for two days.

Works out to more than twice as much range in the summer.

Even my daily commute in Atlanta, where the coldest was like 20, came from 2.3 mi/kwh to 3.5 mi/kwh the past 2 days in the high 60s.

Here are some rough numbers and analysis I threw together earlier:

https://www.macheforum.com/site/thr...e-detailed-look-with-some-measurements.25560/

This was based on a small sample and using the car's reported % battery remaining--which itself is a form of estimation, even when reported directly by the car via OBD--but the implications are pretty clear. Not only does your consumption go up when it's really cold, but your effective battery capacity goes down as well. The cumulative effect of these can be dramatic, as you've noticed.

I had rationalized to myself that it wasn't as cold in Metro Atlanta and my range was not impacted nearly as much as a result.

For in town driving that is the case. Leaving my relatively warm garage and riding around town I really only see about a 25-30% hit to range.

It's the return trips where the car is truly cold that the truth is shown. And then the idea that I could make an entire round trip using less energy than what was needed for one way really opened my ideas. I will really have to pay closer attention to trip planning in cold weather.

Now that it's warmer, I am getting about 3.9 m/kwh (mostly in town driving) .. do with my 70 kwh battery I would assume I would be about to do around 270 miles . But in reality, I'm only getting about 220 miles, which is the advertised range .. any thoughts on what's causing this variance ?
