Often asked question: It "simulates" a low gear by increasing regen when you lift your foot off the accelerator pedal. At least that is what other Ford plugins do: Instead of coasting when your foot is off they add in a bit of regen to make it feel like engine braking*.

* = 1-pedal mode is off.

When I loan my vehicle to friends and family, I tell them that "L" mode limits coasting on level ground or limits speed when descending steep grades.

A while ago a snippet from Ford was posted that lists the functionality as increasing regen (like 1 pedal mode), but with the added attribute that it maintains your speed when going down a steep grade. If one pedal is already enabled then it doesn't do anything more.

Yeah this topic has come up a lot. That may indicate this "L" thing is not the best user interface that Ford could have designed.

Here's the description from the owner manual:

I think the "L" is another case of the Mach-E being a car for normal people and not EV nerds. Most automatics have an "L" or "1" (and sometimes even "2") gear. That said, it's possible that a lot of ICE drivers don't know what that's all about, either. ?‍♂

The DPS6 Fiestas/Foci have S instead of L. 'S' means less shaking and shuddering while shifting. ;)

I know they have that L or 1, or 2.... Just in 45 years of driving I never used them, or for that matter understood if there were time I should be using those gears.

I see L in the Mach E to be similar to B in our Leaf. It increases regenerative braking without being one-pedal. I sometimes use it to slow faster coming up to lights and on downhills.

B also doesn't seem to make much difference in cruise control when the car already uses regeneration to keep speed constant on downhills.

I read that one pedal does not increase regeneration.

Meh... When I lived in Colorado, I just used Neutral while descending.
