What is this?

Just got my MME GT back after installing ppf. On closer inspection I noticed this above the active shutters (driver side). It’s covered with ppf and I can’t find any reference as to it’s function. Can someone enlighten me?

It’s the ambient temperature sensor.

I’m embarrassed to say I’m detailing the interior today and this is the first time I’ve noticed this on the back of the rear view mirror. Is it a safe to remove, should it be removed? I assume it protects the sensors. Probably was missed when it went through the dealer pre buy?
